  1. 2011-2012 Int1/A3

  2. Course Outline • In May, you will sit two exam papers as your final exams • Critical Essay paper – 1 hour • Close Reading paper – 45 mins • But before you sit these, you need to pass your NABs first.

  3. NABS • NABs (National Assessment Bank tasks) are exam tasks which test and check that you’re ready to sit the final exams. • These are pass/fail assessed – you will not get a grade for your NABs. • If you fail a NAB, you will get another chance to resit them.

  4. NABS • Close Reading - this is similar to the final Close Reading paper you will sit in May. • Textual Analysis – where you read an unseen poem or other form of fiction and answer questions on the techniques used. • Writing– you will write either an argumentative, creative or discursive essay on a topic of you choosing (you are allowed to take notes into the exam.)

  5. FOLIO • You will also need to submit ONE piece of writing to be sent away to SQA as a folio piece. • This is marked by SQA and makes up 20% of your FINAL grade.

  6. Close Reading • You will read a passage you have never seen before. • You will then answer questions, which total 30 marks. • You will answer different types of questions, e.g Understanding (U), Analysis (A) and Evaluation (E). • You need to achieve at least 15 marks in order to pass the Close Reading paper.

  7. Critical Essays • Essays are marked on your: • Understanding • Expression • Analysis • Evaluation • They are marked out of 25.

  8. Critical Essays • You will need to answer a question on either PROSE, DRAMA, or POETRY. • Everything you do this year will be to prepare for these exams.
