  2. Cold War Begins (1948) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdizAX0oPGs • The Cold War was a period of global tension and subdued hostility between the communist Soviet Union and the democratic United States from the 1940s to the 1990s. • The Cold War was a psychological war!

  3. Germany divided into east and west (1949) • At the close of World War II, The Soviets occupied the Eastern portion of Germany, while France, Great Britain and the US occupied the western half. As tensions began to harden between the Soviets and their former allies in the West, the division became more and more complete, and the creation of the Berlin wall and two separate German governments was the eventual result.

  4. What happened? • The United States and Soviet Union began to distrust each other. Both had nuclear weapons and feared they could be used on each other. • Each nation wanted to be the strongest in stature!

Korean War begins (1950) • On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south.   7. Korean War • Communist North Korea wanted to take over Democratic South Korea to make one nation. • The United States saw this as a direct threat to democracy, and got involved in the war.

  8. Korean War ends (1953) • Eisenhower had promised that if he was elected in the election of 1952, he would go to Korea and end the war.

  9. Sputnik (1957) • was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth's orbit. It was launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. It put the U.S. in a space race with the Soviet Union. • http://www.history.com/topics/space-race/videos
