  1. Labor Unions 10/19/2012 Focus Question: Who represents workers and gives a voice to their needs?

  2. Opener: • Write down three things you would have changed about your job or work environment yesterday. Why didn’t anyone strike and form a union?

  3. How best to help labor? By the late 1800s (after 1870), many workers in America- some skilled, but most unskilled- working in factories (steel, meatpacking, and textiles) or in coal mines. Others worked in service industries, such as banks or department stores, or as secretaries and nurses. Still others were skilled workers- carpenters and bricklayers. Suppose you are the leader of a labor union during this time. • Who (which groups of people or workers) would you allow in or recruit for your union? Who would you exclude? • What issues and goals would you emphasize? • What strategies would you use to accomplish your goals?

  4. Next- What will you do to benefit labor? Using Student Handout 2- • Groups- write down which groups you will include/represent • Issues- decide which issues you would emphasize and write down your top three choices in order 1-3 • Strategies- Write down the top three strategies your union will use to deal with the issues. *We will share out after all three categories are complete

  5. Think it through- 4) What are the possible unintended consequences of your decisions in #1-3? What could happen, possibly go wrong, or succeed?

  6. Outcomes- what unions actually chose… Answer using Student Handout 3- 5) Which union was closest to the decisions you made in #1-3? 6) Describe the similarities to your union and the union closest to yours.
