  2. New England Colonies • Focused on religion; Puritans not tolerant; • Mostly English • Boston – port • Triangle Trade • Value hard work & thrift • Towns, small farms

  3. Middle Colonies • Catholics (MD) & Quakers (PA) • Tolerant/flexible • Germans, Scots-Irish, Dutch, Swedes • New York City; Baltimore; Philadelphia = Ports

  4. Southern Colonies • Church of England; close ties to England • Dominated by Eastern planters • Cash Crops (Tobacco) • Based on wealth; land ownership • Port = Charleston, SC • Who did the work? • SLAVES

  5. Triangle Trade • A triangle of trade formed between the Colonies, Africa , Europe. • Exports from Africa to the Colonies were slaves. Known as “the middle passage” • Exports of the N. Colonies to the Europe were sugar, tobacco, and cotton. • Exports from the Europe to Africa were rum, textiles and manufactured goods.
