  5. Carcinogen- A substance or agent that causes cancer

  6. Tars- Particles in cigarette smoke that adhere to air passages and lungs

  7. Adrenaline- A hormone released by the adrenal gland in response to danger, excitement, or stress; the hormone that prepare the body to fight danger or flee from it

  8. Cilia- Microscopic hair-like structures that line the air passages and keep the lungs and other organs clean by trapping dust and foreign matter

  10. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States

  11. 443,000 tobacco related deaths in U.S. annually (20% of all U.S. deaths)

  12. Tobacco costs the nation 96 billion dollars in health care every year

  13. If a person does not start smoking by the age of 19- they will probably never smoke

  14. There are approximately 47 million smokers in the U.S.

  15. About 24% of adults smoke and about 30% of adolescents.

  22. Dangers of Tobacco- Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Pulmonary Diseases, and Reproduction Complications.

  23. Nicotine seems to provide both a stimulant and a depressant effect, and it is likely that the effect it has at any time is determined by the mood of the user, the environment and the circumstances of use.

  24. Studies have suggested that low doses of nicotine have a depressant effect, while higher doses have a stimulant effect.

  25. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, but with repeated use, tolerance develops rapidly

  26. FDA • On June 22, 2009 President Obama signed a bill granting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco products.

  27. Crack down on tobacco marketing and sales to kids

  28. Ban candy and fruit flavored cigarettes

  29. Require larger, more effective health warnings on tobacco products

  30. Require tobacco companies to disclose the contents of tobacco products

  31. Ban terms such as “light” and “low tar”

  32. Strictly regulate all health related claims about tobacco products to ensure they are scientifically proven

  33. Empower the FDA authority to regulate changes in tobacco products, such as removal or reduction of harmful ingredients
