K-5 Pro’s • More Collaboration • More vertical articulation • Reduced transitions • Multiple grade levels tested • Control capacity to meet staffing ratios • No breaks in learning to read and language acquisition • Siblings on same campus • Admin. Knowledge base. . . • Discipline long term/consistent • More teaching flexibility in assignments
K-5 Con’s • Boundaries • Waivers • Polarized community • Program improvement • Dissention amongst teachers • Decrease parent involvement • Less enrollment, less money • Created a high / low / forgotten school
K-2 3-5 Pro’s • Lay community concerns to rest • Let people believe students not separated by social/economic levels • No boundaries • Some teachers and staff would be pleased • Easier to “house” materials • ?All students/parents on one site of a grade level ? • Efficient use of current facilities
K-2 3-5 Con’s • Testing – one grade level at one site – could cause Program Improvement in 3 years • Limited to no articulation of instruction, rules, sense of community • Too many transitions in sites of attendance • Parents have the increased possibility of having children at multiple sites • Coordination to place teachers at grade level/sites for expertise • Potential combination classes • Bubbles with few young children on older campus or few old children on younger campus
K-2 3-5 Con’s (continued) • No choice except one school for Program Improvement • Too many teachers on one grade level for frequent training and collaboration • Limits employee teacher choice for area of expertise (grade level) • Loss of intense sense of accountability K-2 vs. 3-5 – high sense of accountability • Limited comparability of campuses across state.
Scenario #1: 2 K-5’s (current configuration) A. Current configuration AT 2 K-5’s 1. Marks Elementary a. Marks Elementary has current CBED enrollment of 422 regular education students. b. 19/28 classrooms are currently being utilized. c. Due to the fact that only 19 classrooms are being utilized, there is 1 vacant classroom and the flexibility to use 8 other possible classrooms for alternative programs including Special Education. • Currently using extra classrooms for: 1) Reading Recovery 2) Parent Room 3) AIM Coaches Room 4) RSP 5) CELDT 6) Computer Lab 7) SDC • Print Shop
Scenario #1: 2 K-5’s Current Configuration (continued) A. Current configuration at 2 K-5’s 2. Dos Palos Elementary a. DPE has current CBED enrollment of 612 regular education students. b. 28/36 classrooms are being utilized. c. Due to the fact that only 28 classrooms are being utilized, there is the flexibility to use 8 other possible classrooms for alternative programs, including Special Education. d. Currently using extra classrooms for: 1) SDC 2) Literacy 3) Computer Lab 4) RSP 5) Intervention 6) CELDT 7) Media Book Storage 8) Parent Coordination Room
Scenario #2: K-2 / 3-5 A. K-2 / 3-5 Configuration 1. Dos Palos Elementary • Dos Palos Elementary would have 544 students as a K-2 school. • 27-28 classrooms would be necessary to hold these students. • Since 27-28/36 classrooms will be utilized, there is still flexibility to hold the current 8 alternative programs at this site. • The question is would all of these programs be necessary at this site as only a k-2 school? 2. Marks Elementary, the 3-5 School • Marks Elementary would have 490 students as a 3-5 school. • 19-20 classrooms will be necessary to accommodate these students. • Since only 19-20/28 classrooms would be utilized, Marks could preserve its 8 alternative programs using the 8-9 extra classrooms. • No additional portables would need to be purchased to accommodate the rest of the programs.
