  3. How ORVA Students Go to School

  4. A Day in the Life of an ORVA Student The following was submitted by a couple of our ORVA 9th graders so that you could see what a real student’s day at ORVA might look like. Because online school has some flexibility, each student’s day will look slightly different: • Wake up 8:30, Eat cereal while reading about the Portland Trail Blazers in the sports page. • Take a shower, brush teeth, get dressed and ready to run any errands needed with mom and sister. • Online Biology Lesson on oxygen, study for unit test. • Work on the Honors Biology Debate about drug testing on animals. • Live Geometry session about dilations and scale factor. Take notes. • Live Biology session - a unit review - play Battleship with the class. In between having fun while answering questions (and trying to sink that last pesky ship!!), I take notes here, too. • Take a break. Read, hang out with sister, or draw. • Online Psychology Lesson on learning and memory. Participate in online discussion about the controversial role of punishment in children. • Take Notes for Honors LACII Project on the negative effects of animal testing. • Online Geometry Lesson on dilations and scale factor. • Eat lunch, make sure lunch dishes are washed. • Study for Civics Unit Test and work on Multimedia project about the 10 amendments. Find one last picture that “describes” the 2nd Amendment and write down my interpretation of the amendment. • PE - Walk/run 1 mile in my neighborhood. • Finish school around 2 or 2:30. • Sewing Class (in my community) from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

  8. How is the highschoolat ORVA differentfrom the middle school? • It is paced – there is a Calendar of lessons for each class, and you should stick to it closely • There are more teacher-graded assignments like essays, research papers, and science labs. • The work is more demanding. • You must make 2 contacts with each teacher per week (by attending a live session, sending them a Kmail, or calling them on the phone). • There are more live sessions to attend each day.

  9. How to Communicateat ORVA HS • Come to Class Connects and talk to your teacher live • Send a Kmail • Call the teacher’s cell phone • Post in a threaded discussion • Write your teacher a comment when you turn in an assignment

  10. Seize the Day… Choose ORVA! • Rigorous curriculum • High standards • Safe environment • Academic program designed to meet individual student needs • Relevant digital literacy skills
