FedEx currently has two configurations flying: -8 and -11 with the -11 modification being incorporated on attrition. • Most common findings: • -Fail to open and or close • Contamination • Due to contamination findings FedEx has implemented a 2000 FH soft time on all removals requiring deep cleaning and overhaul. This is a temporary measure in prep for peak season.

IRREGULAR MEETINGB-2178 Starter Air Valve • 世界机队情况(2):KLM • KLM-experience with the MD11 Starter Air Valve • Present MTBUR for the MD11 Starter Air Valve (LRU 467681) = 5873 FHRS. • A survey in RIAC-CROCOS on 25 SAV-removals in the time-interval 14/02/2001 thru 15/03/2004 reveals the following : • 1. A total of 13 SAVs were removed because the unit did not open electrically. • 2. At 10 occasions the SAV was removed because after engine start-up the 'SAV open'-light was illuminated, indicating a position switch mishap. • 3. For 3 removals it is unclear why the SAV failed to operate properly. • Off-wing Maintainance policy for MD11 Starter Air Valve • KLM-standard is the post-HONEYWELL SB.979826-80-1581 Starter Air Valve p/n 979826-8 that features the new solenoid. • The MD11 Starter Air Valve has a soft-time threshold of 900 TOVH to ensure timely replacement of wear-susceptible parts such as o-rings, gaskets & diaphragm.

Opens to slow or does not close fully.The valve's are often contaminated with oil. Especially the electrical parts are very sensitive for contamination. Regarding this point, the valve operation environment next to the engine must be considered (vibration, temperature, oil, ...). Several modifications which shall handle this problem are public (Oil splash shield, improved sealing, etc.) but can not solve it totally.Butterfly Seal:Occasionally the seals are worn or damaged causing leakage or sticking of the butterfly valve disk. Softtime or Cleaning Procedure: Every starter valve is to be cleaned before any maintenance or repair can be performed. Even if a contamination does not cause a failure. A Softime could be reasonable and has to be investigated.MTBF / MTBUR of P/N used on our MD-11:--> 979826-11: MTBR 4.000 and MTBUR 4.000 Fh*--> 979826-8-LHT002: MTBR 5.900 and MTBUR 6.500 Fh***only MD-11** not only MD-11Several valve configurations are applicable to the MD-11.

NOTE:REPLACE THE STARTER VALVE IF MANUAL OVRD APPLIED.

IRREGULAR MEETINGB-2178 Starter Air Valve • Analysis: • 1. 起动电门接通,Starter Air Valve 电磁阀们通电,活门打开气路通气,活门打开.(25 psia is the normal minimum duct pressure with the valve open) • 2. 当发动机N2转速达到45%, Starter Air Valve 电磁阀们断电,活门关闭气路通气,活门逐渐关闭.(30 psia is the normal minimum duct pressure with the valve close) • 3.参考附表,目前起动活门主要故障现象为起动活门指示灯常亮和起动活门打不开两种,而这样的问题在世界机队都普遍存在.部件本身的可靠性不高及外部污染是造成这些故障的根本原因.

  15. IRREGULAR MEETINGB-2178 Starter Air Valve • Comments: • 针对进厂后发现大量的SAV检查结果均为NFF,EVA采用了Progold+ Non-metal Brush的方法处理电接头,并取得了较好的效果. • 2. EVA 还建议如果执行过人工操控起动发动机,该起动活门需尽快更换. • 3. 针对世界机队普遍采用根据自己机队实际情况,设置softtime对拆下SAV进行深度清洁或则Overhaul,以提高部件的可靠性的做法,值得参考. • 4. 部件需要专门的管理与控制,部件的可靠性需要可靠的数据作为支撑.
