  1. When Worship Is Wrong! Does This Seem Unthinkable & Distasteful To You?

  2. In 1977, Mrs. Maria Rubio of Lake Arthur was rolling out tortillas when she saw the face of Jesus looking back at her from the flat tortilla. Her skillet had burned a representation of a slender, bearded face into the tortilla. She convinced a reluctant priest to bless the piece of bread...then she built a shrine around it. Mrs. Rubio quit her job to devote her full time to tending her tortilla shrine. Friends, neighbors, and strangers stop by to look at it, or to pray in front of it. Mrs. Rubio, who also prays nightly in front of the tortilla, said, "I do not know why this has happened to me, but God has come into my life through this tortilla." Her mother, who once lived with Mrs. Rubio, decided to move to a new home after the shrine was built--the folks riding by and stopping at the shrine bothered her. The tortilla is reported to be in fair condition, though the face has faded.

  3. Worship • “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:4-5, NKJV)

  4. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me," (Exodus 20:2-5, NKJV)

  5. Tabernacle

  6. Tabernacle • "And the Lord said to Moses: “Take sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, and pure frankincense with these sweet spices; there shall be equal amounts of each. You shall make of these an incense, a compound according to the art of the perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. And you shall beat some of it very fine, and put some of it before the Testimony in the tabernacle of meeting where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. But as for the incense which you shall make, you shall not make any for yourselves, according to its composition. It shall be to you holy for the Lord." (Exodus 30:34-37, NKJV)

  7. Warning • Notice the last injunction. • They couldn’t worship God with their perfume, and… • They couldn’t wear God’s perfume for their purposes!

  8. When Worship Is Wrong "And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”" (Exodus 32:4, NKJV)

  9. The Golden Calf • "They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’ ”" (Exodus 32:8, NKJV) • "So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain." (Exodus 32:19, NKJV)

  10. The Golden Calf • "Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it." (Exodus 32:20, NKJV) • "And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”" (Exodus 32:24, NKJV) • "So the Lord plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made." (Exodus 32:35, NKJV)

  11. Nadab & Abihu " Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them." (Leviticus 10:1, NKJV)

  12. Nadab & Abihu • "So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord." (Leviticus 10:2, NKJV)

  13. King Saul "And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever." (1 Samuel 13:13, NKJV)

  14. King Saul • "Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering. Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him. And Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”" (1 Samuel 13:8-12, NKJV)

  15. Uzza "And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled." (2 Samuel 6:6, NKJV)

  16. Uzza • "And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. “These are the things in the tabernacle of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry." (Numbers 4:15, NKJV)

  17. Four Kinds Of Unacceptable Worship! • The Worship of False gods! • "because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things." (Romans 1:21-23, NKJV)

  18. Four Kinds Of Unacceptable Worship! • The worship of the true God in a wrong form.

  19. Four Kinds Of Unacceptable Worship! • The worship of the true God in a self styled manner.

  20. Four Kinds Of Unacceptable Worship! • The worship of the true God, in the right manner, but with the wrong attitude. • "“I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies. Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings. Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments. But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream. " (Amos 5:21-24, NKJV)

  21. Worship in Spirit and Truth • Proper Object = The One True God! • Proper Manner = According to Revealed Truth • Proper Attitude = Thanksgiving & Adoration "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”" (John 4:24, NKJV)
