Programs Available for TWC • Approval of programs is based on a Targeted Occupations List • Developed and issued by Upper Rio Grande @ Work Board • Currently has 36 Occupations in demand and target industry clusters • Training providers must demonstrate that their programs lead to a targeted occupation
Most Popular Careers (among TWC clients) • For Men: • Construction Manager (offered in bilingual structure) • Electrical Assistant (offered in bilingual structure) • Truck Driving • For Women: • Computer Operator (offered in bilingual structure) • Office Assistant (offered in bilingual structure) • Medical Assistant

Assessment of Programs and Providers-Performance Information • What to look for? • Completion Rates per program • Will tell you how many students complete the program they are enrolled in? • Information is per year • Entered Employment Rates per program • How many students completing the program obtained employment? • Clarification should be requested whether employment is related to training or not • Entry wages per program • What is the average entry wage of the students who obtained employment?
Assessment of Programs and Providers-ProgramEntrance Requirements • Info available at: • Schools’ websites • Upper Rio Grande @ Work Centers • At school locations • What do they mean? • This will list what the students need before they are accepted into program • Examples: reading, math and comprehension levels, physical or medical exams required, uniform/ clothing attire, tests and minimum scores required by providers, etc.
Assessment of Programs and Providers-Tests Required • TABE • Targets Reading, Mathematics, and Language • CELSA • Utilized to determine placement levels into ESL courses at Community Colleges. Test measures understanding of word meaning and grammatical ability. • CASAS • Assesses adult basic reading, math, listening, writing, and speaking skills within a functional context • Required tests vary per provider. Student must inquire with school on testing specifics.
Conclusion • TWC students are encouraged to visit at least 3 schools that offer chosen career • Important to shop around and compare • Encourage students to visit as many schools as possible to find the best match • The more informed the students are, the better decision they will make for their future!!!
