  1. CRISIS LEADERSHIP A BIG BASE TO COVER Viv allanson CEO - Maroba

  2. What is it .... What does it look like ???? Like this... OR Like this ...

  3. In the event of a crisis our natural instinct is to look for the phone booth with the superman suit !!! Because we all know that Superman always gets it right .... Yes every time !!!!

  4. Yet ...History tells us another story when it comes to real live CRISES in the absence of a phone booth !!!

  5. What often emerges in a CRISIS in a health or aged care setting is an unsuspecting leader ..... The one who didn’t realize that the roster was actually a lottery in who gets to lead on the BIG DAY.

  6. My own experience has informed me that Bad , Good and even Great Leaders in the midst of a Crisis are not made on the BIG DAY .... They are merely Revealed and Exposed on the day and days following the disaster !

  7. Lets Take a look at you tube for some insight on where Crisis Leadership development begins..... “In the Herd” buffalo v lion v crocodile

  8. I love this illustration , as it expresses what organisations should look like in their people development space ... I call it the class room of real live action !!!

  9. What do we learn from the Herd ? • Create opportunities for “inexperience “ to lead • When disaster strikes or when you stuff up; retreat to take stock and consult ... (It only takes a few minutes ) • When Leadership failure occurs, build on it to further develop the inexperienced & even seasoned leader • Don’t hesitate to retrieve the situation or make right what went wrong...Have another go ! • Don’t ever leave people in a state of failure

  10. And there is more ... • Take the team with you, you need their strength & experience to back your next move , besides that it is great for morale to look over your shoulder and realize you aren’t on your own • Take back what is rightfully yours ( in this case the Baby) For some it will be your dignity • Retreat again to celebrate, de-brief and reflect with your support team & up-line leaders

  11. Quiz Time : How many of you can look over your shoulder and see a queue of potential leaders lined up eyeing of your role ? ( Give me a show of hands)

  12. This is a real concern for our sector : 1.Time and time again I hear of experienced Aged Care Nurses exiting stage right, never to be seen again 2. Experienced Senior Nurse managers are getting harder to find let alone keep 3. Mentors and role models in leadership are scarce and those that are actively mentoring are already at capacity or burning out 4. Some are just trying to survive !!!

  13. If Cities define the nation and Communities define Cities then what defines Communities? Micro Communities: which may be a family, an organisation or business established to serve the needs of that community. ..... Like an Aged Care Facility or a Hospital . From my experience in Leading in a Disaster it was the health of the Micro community that was the game changer !

  14. Our CHALLENGE as future and current leaders is to ensure the Health and Vitality of the particular Micro Community that we have chosen to serve in irrespective of the level.

  15. The good news is.... • YOU get to influence the Health & Vitality of your Micro Community • YOU get to decide if you opt in or out • YOU get to decide if you will step up to the plate to be Mentor or Mentored • YOU get to decide if you will be courageous enough to get in the queue ... To say “Pick me” • YOU get to choose if you will be an encourager or critic • YOU get to DARE to make the difference • YOU ARE THE GAME CHANGER !!!!

  16. At Last it really is all about YOU !!! So don’t wait for the BIG day to arrive ... Make a quality decision to Learn from the herd; start your leadership journey TODAY . With a Healthy Community behind you ..... Success and failure will be met with the same enthusiasm to ensure when Disaster strikes everyone will be at the ready and equipped to get the job done.

  17. When it is all said and done...... The True measure of Leadership is the ability to INFLUENCE...!

  18. Where to from here....?

  19. That’s all folks !
