  6. 4 R’s • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover • These R’s are ranked from best strategy to worst.

  7. Sanitary Landfills • Covered to avoid windblown litter and attract scavengers. • Consist of mostly organic materials

  8. Produces high amounts of leachate (a liquid that results from decomposition • Filtered out and sent to water treatment centers

  9. Anaerobic conditions produce methane and carbon dioxide. • Methane burned off in a controlled manner to prevent explosions.

  10. Secure Landfills • Landfills that are covered once they are full and have wells drilled in them so they can be monitored for leakage from the site • Store hazardous and toxic wastes.

  11. Bioremediation – removal of contaminants from the soil by living things. • Eg. Sunflowers break down radiation into non-harmful chemicals and deposit them in the soil.
