Rationale Why Do: Appropriate use of manipulatives for concept and skill practice has been shown consistently to foster learning and aid retention.
Rationale Uses: • When directed in TE as Special Instructional Support (SIS) • Planning and Pacing Guides • When directed in TE as prescription for Reinforce/Reteach • Prescriptive Teaching Boxes located after CM • To address needs of students that would benefit from Acceleration • Students that consistently earn 90% or above on CM, and have met fluency goals • To address needs of students that would benefit from additional practice prior to Content Mastery • Students that consistently score below 80% in any Step • When data analysis from LOLA identifies areas of additional support • Entire class has difficulty with CM in a specific step

General Principles • Use decodable vocabulary when the emphasis of the activity is to reinforce specific skills or concepts • Bonus words for students that need acceleration • Hold students accountable for work • Include items in sorts that do not fit the sort • Alphabetize It • First sort for correctness, then alphabetize only correctly spelled words • Provide a “Think Space” area for sorts • Students can use this space for words they are uncertain about
