  2. Exo vs. Endothermic • Exothermic = heat (thermic) released (exo) • Exo ‘out’ • Endothermic = heat (thermic) absorbed (endo) • Endo ‘in’

  3. Conversion of States of Matter • Think of ice. What do you have to do to melt ice? If you said, heat it up then your answer is exothermic! You have to absorb energy (heat) to turn ice into liquid. Solid  Liquid  Gas -Endothermic- (absorbs energy) If you go the other way, you give off heat -Exothermic- Gas  Liquid  Solid

  4. Specific Heat Calculations • q= m∆TCp • q= heat (energy) measured in joules • m= mass (grams) • Cp= specific heat capacity J/g x oC • ∆T = change in temp. Tfinal – Tinitial = ∆T
