Case Study: Development of health economic tools and a new patient journey to support patient access to advanced lenses in cataract surgery in the UK Results and outcome Situation • Target MPs were supportive of the new patient journey as a result of to the health economic arguments developed by the DHC health economic team. Meetings were conducted with the Secretary for State for Health. MPs sent press releases highlighting the health economic arguments that DHC had submitted and the overall cost-effectiveness • The Kings Fund open forum debate was attended by several stakeholders to support access for cataract patients to the advanced lenses. Press releases for this meeting were submitted to EUCOMED • The health economic data is now being used by the company in other markets to support market access of the lenses • Patient choice, equity and access for patients to advanced lenses as a result of the work is now being further challenged by patient groups • The ICER work, developed by DHC, showed an excellent cost/QALY to support the introduction of these lenses • Client had to develop a new patient journey to improve the positioning of its contact lens within the market • The company also wanted to generate political pressure to increase funding and enable patient access to multi-focal lens Methodology and timeline • A position statement was developed and tested with UK ophthalmologists, payers, patient groups, pressure groups such as the NHS Alliance and MPs within the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords • A budget impact model and a health economic model were developed by the DHC health economic team to support cost arguments • MPs were lobbied, as well as and influential groups such as the King’s Fund • A full debate on the patient choice and access to advanced lenses was held at the King’s Fund in London • A new patient pathway was developed and validated within UK centres to help position the advanced lenses within the patient journey
