  2. Abolitionist • A person who advocated or supported the abolition of slavery in the U.S.

  3. Harriet Tubman • 1820,Born in Dorchester County, Maryland as a slave on the Edward Brodas’ plantation. • 1849,Escaped to the North. She was 29. • 1848, Married John Tubman • Her name was Araminta Ross before she married John • She took her mother’s name • Saved over 300 slaves in just 19 trips

Sojourner Truth • 1797, Born in Ulster county, New York with the name Isabella Barnfree • 1827, she was freed and changed her name to Sojourner Truth because • Lived in New York after the emancipation of slaves in the north then she moved to the east to preach about slavery • She was known as the Lord’s colored preacher • November 26,1886,Died in Battle Creek, Michigan

  5. John Brown • 1800, Born in Torrington, Connecticut • Moved to Ohio when he was 5 years old • Brown was parts of lots of acts such as “Telephone”. In this incident he helped cut telephone wires at the arsenal military warehouse. • Robert E. Lee found 2 of Brown’s sons dead and Brown wounded. • Then he was guilty for treason and murder so he was sentenced to death and hanged on December 2,1859

Frederick Douglass • Born into slavery on a plantation in Baltimore, Maryland • As a teenager he disguised himself as a sailor • Thus, he escaped slavery and became one of the well-known William Garrison follower, or as a Garrison follower and abolitionist. • Later he was asked to speak at an anti-slavery convention • Afterwards he was hired as a full time agent for the anti-slavery society • He did such a good job at his new work he was promoted to an even higher and more powerful society

Booker t. washington • April 5, 1856, Born a slave in Hale’s Ford, Virginia • He taught for two years at a black school where the only subject he taught was how to escape from their owners. • He became the principal at the Hampton Institute • Later he became principal of a school that is now called Tuskegee University • Was known as the “Wizard of Tuskegee”

Levi coffin • 1798, Born in the state of Indiana • He and his wife Catherine helped more than 2000 slaves escape to freedom for over 35 years • He got money for slaves as quickly as they needed • He saw for himself that slaves were being treated well • In New Garden, North Carolina, He opened a Sunday Quaker school for slaves • Was the president of the Underground Railroad until he died in 1877

Harriet Beecher Stowe • June14, 1811,She was born • She was a loyal and trustworthy abolitionist • She had 6 brothers and 1 sister • Her very close sister, Carolyne, was a writer • 1851, She wrote a book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin • 1866, She got married • Her husband was a minister & an opponent of slavery
