  1. Sulfurreal! An educational rap about the Sulfur Cycle…Yahearrrd.

  2. Give it up for Sulfureal Yo, it’s ya boy, SULFURREAl. Today we gone talk ‘bout the sulfur cycle and why isso important. Ya got me and ma man Michael here. Throw us a Beat!

  3. Proteins The Name is Sulfurreal and this here’s Michael And We’re here to break down the Sulfur Cycle. But first let’s talk sulfur, and why you need it. The reasons you can’t tell Sulfur to BEAT IT. Sulfur is important in making up your proteins and your hormones and vitamins. Ya know what I mean?

  4. Before we get to the cycle, you need to know The types of sulfur Where can most of earth’s sulfur be found? Well it’s stored in rocks and minerals underground! Also there is this one other hint of sulfate salts deep under ocean sediments! There’s sulfur everywhere! Hydrogen Sulfide, bros! It comes from swamps, bogs, flats, and VOLCANOES. It has no color and smells like rotten eggs. Keep learnin’ ‘bout sulfur. Skip the beer kegs!

  5. Sulfur Dioxide is another colorless gas That comes from volcanoes that blast. Sea spray, dust storms, and forest fires emit sulfate particles. I’ll keep rappin this rap ‘bout sulfur till you’re smarticles. Lastly, some algae in the ocean produce a lot of DMS. That stands for dimethyl sulfide, if you didn’t guess. We’re movin on, yo, get to dat cycle, Michael!

  6. Now from my belief, the cycle starts in two places. There’s sulfur in the ocean and on land, in these cases. The hydrogen sulfide from beneath the ground Moves up and about, making it’s way around To the plant’s roots ‘cause they need some to live, and if they don’t die then they’re gonna give Give themselves to the animals so they can eat So the animals feast on this sulfur-filled treat. When the animals die and plants aren’t eaten They’re both matter decaying for a reason.

  7. When the animals die and plants aren’t eaten They’re both matter decaying for a reason. The decaying matter returns to the ground Back to where Hydrogen Sulfide and Salts are found. And if there aint much oxygen in the dirt Some specialized bacteria is used to convert The sulfate ions into sulfide ions right thurrr. They’re deposited insoluble metallic sulfides, ya HEARD. Hold up! We’re not done! We got the oceans and volcanoes for one! *DJ CD skips*

  8. The ocean produces dymethyl sulfide, or DMS. And becomes sulfur dioxide instead. This sulfur dioxide: What’s it doing here? Why is there SO2 in the atmosphere? The SO2 from natural human activity Mindboggingly changes to SO3. Then the sulfur trioxide becomes sulfuric acid, Then combines with other chemicals to create madness! For example Atmosphere

  9. The SO2 from natural human activity Mindboggingly changes to SO3. Then the sulfur trioxide becomes sulfuric acid, Then combines with other chemicals to create madness! For example, Ammonia and the acid make ammonium sulfate. Oh no! Then acid will for and precipitate! These drops of acid rain aint good for the earth. These pollutants hard trees, and aquatic life will be hurt!

  10. Acid rain reaches the vegetation Passing sulfur to God’s other creations: The animals feed on the plants, yeah they do, And then when they die, guess what they do? They do the same thing. They decay into the soil. Return to the ground as forms of sulfur once more. Then the whole cycle starts up again. The Sulfur cycle’s not meant to end. If you still can’t comprehend, don’t be ashamed to look At a picture of the cycle online, or in the book!

  11. Simplified Sulfur Cycle

  12. Steps in the notes and book • The sulfur is first released by underground rocks and minerals and deep ocean sediments. • It is released into the atmosphere, becomes sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, then through bacteria in the H2O, it becomes sulfuric acid. • The sulfuric acid combines with other chemicals (i.e. Ammonia) and make acid rain. • Acid Decomposition-the precipitation of moisture, as rain, with high acidity caused by release into the atmosphere of pollutants from industry, motor vehicle exhaust, and other sources. Acid precipitation with a pH of 5.6 or lower is blamed by various authorities for numerous human health problems, fish kills, and the destruction of timber.

  13. REALLY Simplified Sulfur Cycle

  14. SO4= Sulfate Salts • H2S= Hydrogen Sulfide • SO2= Sulfur Dioxide • H2SO4= Sulfuric Acid • CH3SCH3= Dimethyl Sulfide

  15. Do we HUMANS affect the Sulfur Cycle??? Why good sirs and ma’ams, yes we do. • We burn sulfur containing coal and oil to produce electric power. • We REFINE sulfur containing petroleum for gas, heating oil, and other useful products. • We change metallic mineral ores and turn them into free metals (i.e. copper, lead, zinc, etc.)
