  1. Mr. Comfort Room 307 Accelerated Algebra 1

  2. Algebra 1 lays the foundation for all higher level courses in mathematics. The key concepts in this course are the real number system, linear equations, functions, graphing, and practical problem solving. Using multiple representations, for example, writing, tables, graphs, and symbols, to model real-world situations are the main theme of this course. This course is the basic mathematics course for all college preparatory students and forms the prerequisite for all high level courses. Success in this course is critical in order to continue in the Accelerated math program.

  3. The units covered will include: • Unit 1: The Language of Algebra • Unit 2: Solving Linear Equations • Unit 3: Graphing Linear Functions and Equations • Unit 4: Writing Linear Equations • Unit 5: Solving and Graphing Linear Inequalities, Absolute Value Equations and Inequalities, and Exponential Equations. • Unit 6: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities • Unit 7: Quadratic Equations and Functions

  4. Class Expectations • You are expected to do your best at all times! This means: • Be Prepared • Cooperate • Attend class • Take Responsibility • Stay Motivated • Participate

  5. Be prepared for class • This means that you need the following everyday: • A pencil • Your coved math book • Calculator • UD agenda book • Binder

  6. Attendance • It is extremely important that you get in class on time and with the appropriate materials. If you are absent, you will need to check your folder for any missed class work and assignments. You will be responsible for any notes given in class. I will not remind you of missing assignments! Remember the attendance policy, and how many points you could loose on your final grade for not being in class.

  7. Homework Assignments: • Written homework assignments are given on a regular basis and used in class as part of the learning process. Assignments will be checked and/or collected periodically. You will be given 0 to 5 points for each assignment checked. If you do not do an assignment you are given a zero. Zeros can’t be made up. Make sure it is always done. Doing your homework is directly related to your success!

  8. Quizzes and Tests: • Quizzes are given periodically. Each quiz is worth 10 to 50 points. Quizzes will be announced one day before they are given. Three to four tests will be given a marking period. Test dates will be announced a few days before the test is given. If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz they MUST be completed outside of class.

  9. Notebook: • A notebook is required to keep a daily record of all the work for the course. Students will keep this up-to-date, complete with notes for each unit, class and homework assignments, and any writing assignments given.

  10. Standard-Based or Rubric Problems: • These problems will be assigned periodically throughout the semester (about one per chapter). These problems will give you an opportunity to solve the problem but also communicate your ideas through the writing process. The practice will help you in the PSSA testing. You will be given a due date plenty of time in advance so proper planning is necessary. Use your student planner and your organizational skills so you won’t be doing working the night before it is due.

  11. Grades: • Grades will be posted regularly. Individual progress reports will be distributed every three weeks. All progress reports are to be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day for credit.

  12. Extra Help: • Extra help is available after school. Please see me to arrange a time. Math tutorial is also available after school on Tuesday and Thursday.
