  6. “In our interview with the President [Martin Van Buren], he interrogated us wherein we differed in our religion from the other religions of the day. Brother Joseph said we differed in mode of baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. We considered that all other considerations were contained in the gift of the Holy Ghost, and we deemed it unnecessary to make many words in preaching the Gospel to him. Suffice it to say he has got our testimony. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4:42)

  7. Let us study the Master's every teaching and devote ourselves more fully to his example. He has given us "all things that pertain unto life and godliness." He has "called us to glory and virtue" and has "given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these [we] might be partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:3-4). I believe in those "exceeding great and precious promises," and I invite all within the sound of my voice to claim them. We should strive to "be partakers of the divine nature."Only then may we truly hope for "peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come" (D&C 59:23). (Howard W. Hunter, Ensign, November 1994, p. 8)

  8. “The Weakness of Man” Ether 3:2; 4:11-12 + Ether 12:27-28

  9. “Just as a man does not really desire food until he is hungry, so he does not desire the salvation of Christ until he knows why he needs Christ. No one adequately and properly knows why he needs Christ until he understands and accepts the doctrine of the Fall and its effect upon all mankind. . .” (Ezra Taft Benson, Ensign, May 1987, 85).

  11. “...where doubt and uncertainty are there faith is not, nor can it be. For doubt and faith do not exist in the same person at the same time; so that persons whose minds are under doubts and fears cannot have unshaken confidence; and where unshaken confidence is not there faith is weak . . . and they will grow weary in their minds, and the adversary will have power over them and destroy them.(Joseph Smith, Lectures on Faith 6:12)
