High Level Goals • Long Term: • At targeted high schools, shift culture of research as a valued asset for learning and instruction • Improve quality/quantity of inquiry research in STEM courses and clubs • At targeted high schools, improve participation in research competitions by 20% annually for 3 years
High Level Goals • Short Term: • Start 3 research clubs: 2 in FUHSD and 1 in SCUSD • Mid-Year Update • FUHSD: 3 new research clubs/student research projects started (Fremont, Monta Vista, and Homestead H.S’s.) and the Lynbrook H.S. club expanded. • SCUSD: 1 new research club started at Santa Clara H.S. • Develop and implement an elective research course in SCUSD for the 2010-2011 academic year • Mid-Year Update • 1 research course started at Wilcox H.S. with 6 students enrolled. 4-5 other students working on science fair projects outside course.
High Level Goals • Short Term (continued) • Intel/IISME will establish a Resource Bank: mentors, best practices, web resources, curriculum, etc. • Mid-Year Update • Resource Bank established along with an Intel Online Community • Collaborative members met in September, 2010 • Best practices, success strategies, processes, etc. shared • Two experienced members led a tutorial on leveraging the Science Buddies website • Meeting content will be incorporated into the Resource Bank
High Level Goals • Short Term (continued) • Intel/IISME Research Collaborative team will utilize science research during instruction • Mid-Year Update • All 12collaborative members are utilizing science research/inquiry assignments with their students. • Examples: • Wilcox HS (SCUSD): 95 Physics are working on an investigation assignment as part of their curriculum. • Leadership HS (SJUSD Charter): 100 Biology students completed an inquiry lab addressing both physiology and experimental design. They will perform additional inquiry research activities throughout the year, culminating in a research project.
Objectives • Success Measures • Increase student participation in research: courses, clubs, competitions by 20% annually for three years Mid-Year Update: All new clubs are in development stages • Online community and resource bank accessed by all collaborative participants amb participation survey Mid-Year Update: Online community and resource bank is in development stages • Increase inquiry projects within the classroom by 50% for collaborative teams based on self-report Mid-Year Update: projects underway but too soon to quantify.
