  3. c. 12,000 BC • North American Indian cultures flourish across the continent.

  4. 1000 AD • Leif Ericsson (Scandinavian) lands on Newfoundland • No permanent settlements were established.

  5. 1492 • Christopher Columbus (financed by Spain) lands in the Bahamas. • Further exploration follows (by many other European countries, primarily Great Britain & France) and colonies were established

  6. Spanish Exploration: • 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon lands on Florida’s coast • 1565 Saint Augustine, Florida • First permanent European colony in North America

  7. English/British Exploration: • 1607 – Jamestown, Virginia • First permanent English settlement • 1620 – Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts • Pilgrims formed the Mayflower Compact, the root of our government

  8. English/British Exploration: • 1664 – New Amsterdam is taken from the Dutch and renamed New York

  10. 1754 – 1763 • French & Indian War • Wars between Britain and France competing for control of North America • France and Britain each had American Indian allies • Treaty of Paris (1763) ends the war

  17. Civil War • April 1865 • Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.

  18. Late 1800s • 1863 – Homestead Act allows settlers to claim 160 acres of land • 1865 – Thirteenth Amendment ratified, prohibiting slavery • 1867 – USA buys Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million
