  1. CHAPTER 6 – Quadrilaterals

  2. Quadrilaterals Quadrilaterals are any polygons which have four sides. We will be looking at the following polygons: Parallelograms, Kites, Rhombuses, Rectangles, Squares, Trapezoids, Isosceles Trapezoids.

  3. Classifying Polygons • Polygons are easier to understand when we organize them in to a family tree.

  4. How are you at classifying things? • Organize the following words in tree shaped organizer Dog, Mammal, Cat, German Shepherd, Animal, Reptile Animal This arrangement puts topics in order from large categories to smaller ones. Mammal Reptile Cat Dog German Shepherd

  5. Parallelograms • Parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two sets of parallel sides Why is there a rectangle included here? What other shapes could also be displayed here?

  6. Rectangles • Rectangles are parallelograms with four right angles.

  7. Rhombus • A Rhombus is a parallelogram with 4 congruent sides. Why is there a square included on this slide?

  8. Squares • Squares are parallelograms with 4 congruent sides and 4 rights angles.

  9. Trapezoids • Trapezoids are quadrilaterals with exactly one set of parallel sides

  10. Isosceles Trapezoids • Isosceles Trapezoids are trapezoids with two congruent legs

  11. Kites • Kites are quadrilaterals with no sets of parallel sides and 2 sets of congruent sides which are adjacent to each other. Note: There are many other quadrilaterals which also have no sets of parallel sides that we do not give names to

  12. Quadrilateral Family Tree • You and a partner now have 10 minutes to organize each of the quadrilaterals into a family tree. Use the following words: quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, square, trapezoid, isosceles trapezoids, kite. Complete the graphic organizer.

  13. Quadrilateral Q’s – True or False • All Squares are Rectangles. • True • A trapezoid is a parallelogram. • False • A rhombus can be a kite. • False • Some parallelograms are squares. • True • Every Quadrilateral is a parallelogram. • False

  14. More Quadrilateral Q’s • What are all of the possible names one could use for a square? • Rhombus, Rectangle, Parallelogram, Quadrilateral

  15. Find x and y. • Kite 14 x + 3 2x - 1 y-7

  16. Find x and y • Rhombus 10 + 2x 2y+6 8x-2 4y- 2

  17. Homework • P 290 (1-12,19-26,36,46-49)
