Chapters Report • NPSS has 21 chapters and joint chapters, including 1 student branch chapter: 19 are active -- 9 in North America, 5 in Europe, 3 in Asia, 2 in North Africa; 2 are currently inactive. • Chicago has been inactive since 2008, and will be dissolved; Germany has become inactive with retirement of Klaus Frank. • Efforts are under way to form new chapters: – Beijing (Zhen-An Liu) [Beijing chapter+Tsinghua student chapter] – Student chapters in France and Region 8 (Jean-Luc Leray) – Student chapter at Vellore Institute of Technology, India • I attended a Region 8 chapter coordinators meeting in Budapest to learn more about organizing and supporting new chapters • Patrick Le Dû plans to attend the Region 8 Student and Young Professionals Congress in Poland, which will have student branch representatives from throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. • Chapter support in 2014: $2600—Seoul ($500); East Ukraine ($500); Singapore ($500); Albuquerque ($500); Alexandria University SBC ($600).

Chapter Best Practices • Support for existing Chapters – Financial support – Distinguished Lectures program (at least one per chapter per year ) – Better communication with chapter chairs, including invitation to attend nearby AdCom meetings – Chapter awards (e.g., chapter of the year, most improved chapter) – Improved visibility for chapter events (webpage; Facebook) – Involvement of local chapters at conferences, including chapter coordination meetings. Funds for chapter chairs to attend? • Active promotion of new Chapters – Startup support [e.g., free NPSS memberships] – Chapter Founder’s award • Special support for new student Chapters – Improved outreach and membership drives at universities – Free first-year NPSS membership for students – More student volunteer roles and student travel awards
NPSS Chapter Founder’s Award Description: To recognize individuals who found a new chapter for the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. Prize: Plaque Funding: Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. Eligibility: Must be a member of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society and found a new Society chapter. Basis for Judging: Formation of a new chapter. If multiple chapters are founded in a year, then the founder of each chapter will receive the award. If two people found a new chapter together, each will receive the award as a co-founder. If more than two individuals help found a single chapter, then the primary two persons will receive the award as co-founders. Presentation: The awardee may receive the award by mail or at an IEEE NPSS sponsored meeting or conference that they are attending.
