  2. Succession • Definition according to The American Heritage College Dictionary – the act or process of following in order or sequence • Ecological Definition - orderly succession of communities to a climax community (biome) • Ex:mosses grasses shrubs trees forest

  4. Two types of Succession • Primary succession - begins with bare rock exposed by geologic activity -Geologic activity includes lava flows, new islands, glacier retreat

  5. Two types of succession • Secondary succession – begins on soil from which previous community has been removed Ex. Fire and agriculture

  6. Important Terms • Pioneer community – the first collection of organisms to inhabit the newly exposed land

  7. Important Terms • Climax community – the collection of organisms that result from succession and are steady over time
