  2. What’s the issue? • Title IX effects equality in college sports • Eliminate sports • Example UWRF • Creates financial issues • Affects the colleges students are attending • Sports not offered

Title IX • Established in 1972 • “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” • Greatest contributing factor for gender equality in athletics

  4. Review of literature • Title IX has created an infrastructure for women to pursue their passion in sports • From 1971 to 2002 the number of women in college sports increased fivefold • Due to Title IX, non-profit men’s sports team are cut to offer women’s sports that are being supported by profitable men’s sports

  5. Review Continued Choosing what sports to offer… • The influence of shifts in high school participation trends on intercollegiate sports offerings • The impact of rising health care costs on sports with high injuries • Increased number of international student-athletes in particular sports • Rise of enrollment management strategies that favor sports with athletes who are well prepared academically, able to pay high tuition prices, and diverse in terms of race and ethnicity • 5 Major findings!

Implication • Created opportunities for more ethnic and racial diversity within college athletics • If participation in intercollegiate athletics continues to increase, it may create problems • more difficult to be apart of a team, so many people trying out • More money will be needed to keep up with the demand of all of the participates

  7. Conclusion • Title IX is a very in depth law, that has provide more equality in intercollegiate athletics • There is an on going debate about the effects it has on different sports (financial, participation, equality) • There have been problems that have come from this but overall it has been beneficial to athletic programs as a whole.
