  1. CUE—Focus on Technology 1800’s 1889 John Richards Rheem/Specialty Products Division Oct. 2010 Heat Pump Water Heaters

  2. The water heater is often called the ‘forgotten appliance.’ It’s hidden in basements, closets, attics, crawlspaces, garages, etc. Out of sight, out of mind.

  3. Out of sight, out of mind But…Because of • Heavy energy consumption • Numerous energy strategies • Numerous new products Water heating is a key ingredient in • Load building/switching programs • Efficiency Programs • RenewableEnergy Programs • Demand-Response or “Smart-Grid” In fact…Some energy experts have called the Heat Pump Water Heater the next CFL!

  4. It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Be it... Natural Gas, Propane, Electric, Solar, Nuclear, Geothermal, Wind, Wave, Hydro, Wood, Oil, Coal, Peat Moss, Etc And energy prices will be rising

  5. Utilities and Water Heaters • “Good”, “Profitable”, “Even” LOAD… • 2nd largest residential load 15-25% • ~ Non-seasonal, ~365 days per year • Late winter peaking • Morning Peak (showers) vs. Afternoon Peak (air conditioning) • Plus…. Controllable— Store Thermal Energy: Demand-Response/”Smart Grid” • Peak Shaving, Valley Filling • No “Lifestyle” change w/proper sizing

  6. Heat Pump Water Heaters Uses heat from the air to heat the water Uses ½ the electricity! 30% Federal Energy Efficiency Tax Credit (up to $1500)

  7. Why HPWH failedthe first time • 1970’s Oil Embargo ended • Too noisy • Not enough hot water • Not dependable • Not readily available • Lack of consumer awareness

  8. HPWH’s will succeed this time • EnergyStar • Major manufactures • Computerized controls • Much quieter • More hot water • Widely available

  9. What’s Happening & Whyin the Pacific Northwest Washington Oregon Idaho Montana Efficiency=Generation

  10. What’s Happening & Whyin the Pacific Northwest HPWH Product testing at NREL Pilot Programs Planning of incentive (rebate) programs

  11. What is happening? • Rebates and Tax Credits • Federal Tax Credit: 30% (expires Dec. 2010) • State of Oregon: $400 Tax Credit • BPA: Pending • Energy Trust of Oregon: Pending • Puget Sound Energy (IOU): $250 rebate • Portland General Electric (IOU): Promotions

  13. PGE Launch Event October 2009

  14. How about the big Muni’s? Working on a 2011 rebate program RFP

  15. Colorado Happenings • Co-ops • Tri-State G&T • Sponsoring 30 test installations • WAPA • Sponsored Water Heater Technology Workshop
