1. Erasmus Opportunities to study & work abroad in the EU Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

2. Erasmus Programme • The Erasmus scheme, funded by the European Commission, was introduced in 1987 to promote student mobility within the EU. • Erasmus offers students an opportunity to study and/or work (min 3 months, max 12 months) in another EU country, as a recognised part of their degree programme. • Erasmus students can receive a grant to contribute to the extra costs of studying/working abroad. 3. Erasmus Grants • Erasmus grant allocations are made based on destination country and number of months abroad. • Erasmus grants are generally paid in 2 parts: first payment – 80% - at the beginning; second payment at the end of the period abroad. Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

4. Erasmus Grants • Erasmus grants are paid directly into student bank accounts via BACS. • Grants are usually paid in £ sterling. • There are 3 country bands for grant amounts for 2013/2014. Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

5. Erasmus Grants 12/13 – Country bands Band 1: 275 EUR/month: Bulgaria, Romania Band 2: 315 EUR/month: Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey Band 3: 375 EUR/month: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. Countries in Bands 1 and 2: additional one-off supplementary 400 EUR priority country payment. Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

6. Erasmus Grants – Example 1 A student studying and/or working in France, Germany or Spain for 9 months in 2013/2014; grant calculated/paid as follows: 9 x 375 EUR = 3375 EUR Initial payment: 80% = 2700 EUR Final payment: 20% = 675 EUR Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

7. Erasmus Grants – Example 2 A student studying or working abroad for 4 months in the Czech Republic in 13/14: grant calculated/paid as follows: 4 x 315 EUR = 1260 EUR + 400 EUR = 1660 EUR Initial payment: 80% = 1008 EUR, plus 400 EUR priority country supplement: 1408 EUR Final payment: 20% = 252 EUR. 8. Erasmus Grants – additional funding Supplementary allowances for students with special needs – additional funding is available for students and staff with special needs wishing to participate and which would not be possible without extra financial support. 9. Erasmus Grants – additional funding Widening Participation Supplementary Grant: for 2013/2014 a supplementary grant of 500 EUR may be paid to undergraduate and postgraduate participating students from households with annual incomes of £25,000 or less. This allowance may also be paid to students with a disability. Widening Participation information and application forms will be distributed to participating students. Erasmus 13-14 – Aug 2013

10. Erasmus Grant Paperwork • Erasmus students notified to International Development via Faculty/School offices. There is a short Northumbria Erasmus application form to complete. • International Development staff send grant information pack to student via e-mail (or by post if requested). • Info pack includes: cover message introducing Erasmus and instructions; bank details form; student mobility agreement (study and/or work incorporating a learning/training agreement); Erasmus Student Charter; confirmation of attendance form; note of Erasmus online report form. 11. Erasmus Grant Paperwork • Learning Agreements: all students studying abroad need to have a learning agreement signed by them, the home and host institution, before departure. • Training Agreements: for students on work placement abroad a training agreement has to be signed by the student, home institution and work placement provider, before departure. • For 13/14, should it not be possible to arrange signature before departure, these must be completed and signed by all parties within 2 months after the mobility start date. 12. Erasmus – additional information • For 2013/2014 students abroad as Erasmus for the whole academic year will have their tuition fees waived (if paying home/EU tuition fees). • Should students return before completing a minimum of 3 months, the whole Erasmus grant will have to be repaid. • If a student returns earlier than planned, but after the min 3 months has been achieved, the amount to be repaid will be worked out pro-rata. 13. Erasmus – additional information • Application forms for partner universities: check out the partner website. Most partners now have a standard application form/procedure. • Accommodation: again, check out partner website for details. • Insurance: whilst for health purposes most things are covered by the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), it is recommended that students take out their own insurance which will cover, for instance, additional medical/health items, personal possessions and personal/legal liability.
