  1. Luke 16:29-31 They have moses and the prophets

  2. They have moses and the prophets • Rich man desired his brothers’ salvation, since he couldn’t get any. • Abraham’s response lets him know that the scriptures of God are enough to teach escape from torment. • Specifically the first 5 books of Moses(Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) and the writings of the prophets.

  3. They have moses and the prophets • The verses indicate that if people won’t believe the words of scripture, then neither will they believe if someone comes back from the dead. • Even a miraculous event such as resurrection won’t convince someone who won’t take God at His word.

  4. Crisis Christians: Plead with God in crisis situations or events that cause great grief. Many turn to God but often lose interest later or go back when they see relief. Exod 8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them, as Jehovah had spoken. Examples

  5. Examples • Needs science/evidence: Some people will explain away miracles with science and won’t believe even if its done in front of them. John 9:30-34

  6. Hard hearted: Disbelief is so great that a miracle is easily ignored and kept out. Mark 3:4-5 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful on the sabbath day to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to kill? But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their heart, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth; and his hand was restored. examples

  7. Worldliness: Sin is more attractive and possessions more desirable. Rom 1:22-25 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves: for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Php 3:18-19 For many walk, of whom I told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is perdition, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. Examples

  8. Is the Bible enough for us? 2 Peter 1:3 seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue; We also have the scriptures. Do we want a sign(ask from God in prayer)? Do we need science to help us believe miracles? Are we susceptible to these things? life all godliness

Are we susceptible to these things? life • pas • pas • all, any, every, the whole: - all (manner of, means) alway (-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no (-thing), X throughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever. • Same word used in: • I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. • & • I John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. all godliness

  10. Mark 9:23-24 23 And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst! All things are possible to him that believeth. 24 Straightway the father of the child cried out, and said, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. • Man asked for help in His belief. • Often Jesus told people that their faith healed them. • If we have faith/belief in God, we will listen to His words and truly be healed of our sins, the real sickness. They have moses and the prophets

  11. Do we expect a great sign or occurrence to help our belief? • Signs given were not given to those who didn’t believe in Jesus. Matthew 13:54-5854 And coming into his own country he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. What do we expect?

  12. Miracle disbelieved even at Jesus’s own words: Mark 16:9-149 Now when he was risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, disbelieved. 12 And after these things he was manifested in another form unto two of them, as they walked, on their way into the country. 13 And they went away and told it unto the rest: neither believed they them. 14 And afterward he was manifested unto the eleven themselves as they sat at meat; and he upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them that had seen him after he was risen. Even if one rise from the dead

  13. Miracle overlooked even when done in front of them: John 6:26-31 26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him the Father, even God, hath sealed. 28 They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30 They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. Even if one rise from the dead

  14. Some doubted Matthew 28:16-17 16 But the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him ; but some doubted. • Sign isn’t the important thing, it points to the words. Romans 1:16 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  15. 2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and at the point of death. 3 And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant. 4 And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him; 5 for he loveth our nation, and himself built us our synagogue. 6 And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: 7 wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 9 And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole. Luke 7:2-10

  16. Do we not hear about Jesus from Bible, from other’s that saw Him and were in His presence? • Do we argue with God about what we need, do we think we know more than God? Isa 29:16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding? Do we know Jesus?

  17. Phil 4:8-9 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Hebrews 5:14 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. do we study? How much?

  18. How can we expect to learn anything from God’s word if we don’t apply the same rules of studying to it that we do to other subjects/skills? Practice? Time? Patients? Thought? Questions? Application? Team effort? Let’s be better students, and practice the word of God. Do we respect the word of god?

  19. Are you a Christian? Heb 10:26-27 26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.
