  1. First Year Reading Habits and Attitudes 2013 St. Pauls Secondary School, Greenhill’s.

  2. Aim of Project The promotion and development of Literacy: Students LEADING “Research” from the Bottom up Integrating the use of ICT a Second Year committee was purposively selected to gather analyse and present data on First Year Reading habits and attitudes.

  3. Student Learning Objectives To develop teamwork, communication, peer mentoring and presentation skills. To enhance literacy, numeracy (statistics) and ICT Skills. To develop basic research skills – information gathering and design of survey instrument. Students should know how to report research findings.

  9. There was a 99% response rate by First Years. Key Statistics 84%agreed that reading is important. 71%agreed that reading is a skill for life. 63%enjoyed reading.

  10. Key Statistics Cont. 56% agreed that reading is fun. 47%agreed that reading teaches them how other people live. 44%agreed that reading helps them understand the World. 36% reported that their reading time has decreased in recent years.

The Importance of reading: First Year comments “It helps you learn.” “It helps to improve your English and your imagination.” “It helps your speech…[and] writing… it helps me when I make stories.” “It broadens your mind and improves your vocabulary.” “It improves spelling and grammar and you learn new things.”
