  1. Taking Sides You will discuss the causes of the Civil War and research states' rights, slavery, tariff disputes, and cultural differences and learn there is little stability in the nation at this time. Then you will participate in a town meeting to discuss the issue of seceding from the Union and role-play the opinions of the opposing sides.

  2. Vocabulary • Rebuttal:  to disapprove of the opposing side's argument with a statement • Tariff:  a tax imposed by the government on imports or exports • Secession:   the withdrawal of eleven Southern states from the Union in 1860 and 1861 • Secede:  to break away from a group, such as the Southern states seceding from the Union • States’ Rights:  the belief that each state should be allowed to make its own decisions about issues affecting it • Sympathizer:  a person who is favorably inclined toward a particular party or cause • Union:  the states that remained part of the United States of America during the Civil War • Confederacy:  the eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union during the Civil War

  3. Manifest Destiny • Suddenly Americans began to think how the western lands should be settled.  Americans disagreed about this.  The disagreements helped start a bloody Civil War between the Northern and the Southern states.

  4. By the 1860s the regions of the North and the South were very different.

  5. A Nation Divided 1861-1865

  6. The North • Was building cities, factories and railroads. • Needed a lot of workers for the factories. • Had workers who were free, not slaves.

  7. The South • had few factories or large cities. • had most of its people still living on farms. • had large farms called plantations. • had African slaves who planted and harvested plantation crops, especially cotton.

  8. North vs. South • Using Week 14 of the Social Studies Weekly, use the T-Chart to identify the differences between the North and the South before the start of the Civil War. • Glue into your SS textbook. • Read about “Slave Families.” In the chart provided, list some of the challenges slave children experienced during the 1800’s. • Glue into your SS textbook.
