  2. How does culture change? • 3 ways • Discovery: finding something that already exists: the “New World,” human athletic ability- <Michael Phelps> • Invention: Creating something new: cars, computers, TV, satellite, cell phones • Diffusion: borrowing from other cultures: tacos, clothing, etc

  3. Cultural Diversity • Differences in a culture • Christianity is a culture, but there are Episcopalians, Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists, etc with slight differences • American Culture is made up of immigrants who brought all different aspects of their original culture to us (The Melting Pot)

  4. Subcultures • Cultures within a culture • American is the main culture • Subcultures include: German Americans, Italian Americans, African Americans • Windsor is the main Culture • Subcultures include: WHS basketball, cheerleading, french club, drama, choir, band, soccer, A+, etc…

  5. Counterculture • A subculture that deliberately opposes aspects of the dominant culture • Hippy movement • Hell’s Angels • White Supremacists • Black Panthers

  6. Cultural Universals • Found in every culture everywhere • Eating, sleeping, childbearing/rearing, music, mourning, government, funerals, language, marriage, etc… • Cultural particulars: differences within the universals • We all eat, but the particular foods vary from culture to culture. We all speak, but the specific language differs…
