Welcome to 6th grade Science We’re looking forward to an exciting year. We have lots of fun and challenging activities and experiences planned. The purpose of the sixth grade science curriculum is to introduce and allow students to explore various areas of science through the utilization of the science inquiry based method. Students develop their curiosity about the world through questioning, observations, inferences and problem solving. • Supplies • Textbooks • Chemical Building Blocks ISBN 978-0-13-365111-9 • Earth’s Structure ISBN 978-0-13-368484-1 • Astronomy ISBN 978-0-13-368487-2 • Diversity of Life ISBN 978-0-13-368490-2 • Online http://www.myscienceonline.com (all students will be issued with an ID and password) • Binder • Loose Leaf Paper • Blue, Black and Red Pens • Pencils and colored pencils • Metric Ruler • Safety Glasses • Scissors & Glue Stick Units of Study Il Standards 11 and 13 Science Method & Lab Safety – Throughout the year students Will practice their skills of Problem solving and working in A safe environment. Il Standard 12 Chemistry – students will be able to identify matter and its properties, be able to find volume, mass and density using appropriate equipment. Earth’s Structure– students will discover the wonder of Earth’s systems and how they have developed over time. Astronomy– students will investigate our universe; in particular, expand their knowledge of space, solar systems, moon phases and space exploration Diversity of Life – students will look at life from the tiniest of organisms through an array of living things. This includes the parts of a cell, identifying microscopic organisms, parts of a plant, and classification of living things. Grading is based on a variety of activities that take place in and out of the classroom. Grades are weighted - Tests, Labs, Projects and Homework/Classwork/Reading. In addition, it is also important for students to submit work that is neat and carefully completed following time limits and instructions given by their teacher. Points are deducted for work that is handed in late, missing a heading or is sloppy. science teachers 847-566-9384 Mrs. D. Hoerrmann – Ext. 1236 Mrs. A. Name Date Period Headings on papers count as part of your grade. Remember to put your heading on all your work. Classroom Guidelinesfor Students • What should I do, if I don’t understand the material? • Be a good scientist, ask questions and try to solve • your problem. • Here’s how to start: • review the material again (use your notes or go to your teacher’s website) • talk to/or discuss with a classmate or parent • go see the teacher during advisory. • It is not always possible to see the teacher during class time. There are too many distractions at the beginning of class, so try to see your teacher when he/she has the time to go over the material with you. • Student Responsibilities: • Bring materials to class • Binder • Loose leaf paper • Pencils/colored pencils • Blue/black/red pens • School planner • Headings on paper should include : • your FIRST and LAST name • Date • Period • Each day check the board for introductory activities, assignments or reading • Get out your homework and/or materials for the day. • Quality of work NOT speed is important • Final written work (labs, projects, etc.) should be typed or on loose leaf paper using blue/black pen (not paper torn ripped!) • To answer questions on labs and tests, provide details and specifics. Yes or No is not a complete answer, you have to explain. • Use complete sentences • Check your work • All tests should be taken in blue/black PEN (don’t lose a point for using pencil!) • When absent, check teacher websites for homework and the homework center in your classroom. D • Be a good listener • Do your best and have fun! Resources Teacher websites have a lot of information available including fun and interesting websites. The 6th grade team also has a website that has daily homework, long range planner, online textbook links and information about your teachers. Use the Common Goal/Teacher Ease grade program to check on your grades. Use this information to talk to your teacher about things you can do to do better. • How to be a good scientist….. • Ask questions • Design ways to solve problems • Observe and record • Draw conclusions (inferences)
