Research Data ManagementCase Development Process Nancy LaPelle Nancy.LaPelle@umassmed.edu November 2012
Case Study Development Process (p.1*) • Recruit researcher with a story to tell • Get consent to record • Provide script to interviewee, if desired • Conduct interview • Review project purpose • Ask questions and clarify responses • Draft case and outstanding questions • Ask researcher to review/edit/respond • Review with project team; note their questions • If needed, get questions answered by researcher * Referenced page #s refer to the handout sent earlier
Using the Interview Script (pp. 2-3) • Overview question(s) – intent is to get researcher to talk about aspects of the project s/he sees as significant with as little prompting as possible • Each question 2-7 (and prompts) may be omitted if interviewee has fully addressed topic while providing overview • Questions 2-7 reflect the topics in the “Simplified Data Management Plan” used as a framework for the curriculum
Materials Provided Reflect Evolution during Original Project • They don’t follow the process steps exactly • Research interviewee was on project team • Interview was done in two steps • Overview questions only were asked at first meeting • Interviewer listened to recording and summarized key points (pp. 4-5) • Realizing gaps, a second interview (actually done via email) was done asking her to specifically address the topics in the simplified management plan in a more organized way (pp. 6-7) • The current process combines these two data collection activities in a single interview
Drafting the Case • Combine data collected from overview question and questions 2-7 into a story line See pp. (8-9) • Overview of project purpose and team roles • Description of each data source, data collection mechanisms, formats, storage/backup/security methods, related legal and ethical issues, challenges encountered • Data analysis/integration process • Issues related to possible reuse or sharing of the data • Draft possible discussion questions related to curriculum modules (See pp. 9-10)
Review of the Case Write-up • Researcher review • Have you captured what they told you correctly? • What questions remain to be addressed from your perspective? • What changes would researcher make? • Project team review (See p. 11) • How can the case be used to illustrate learning objectives in the curriculum modules? • For which modules would/wouldn’t the case be a relevant learning tool • Does the project staff have questions that only the researcher can answer? • Get answers from researcher as needed • Make revisions (See pp. 12-13)
Develop Aids for Potential Instructors • Finalize teaching points this case can be used to illustrate for each module (p. 14) • Develop shorter excerpts of the case that can be used for the relevant modules (p. 15) • Revise discussion questions related to that module (p. 16) • Develop assessment quizzes as needed for the case related to modules for which it is relevant (pp. 17-18) • Provide answer sheet for the quizzes
