Sacco and Vanzett • Italian immigrants who were anarchists(people who oppose all forms of government) • Accused of killing a pay clerk at a shoe store and robbing them of $ 15,000 dollars • No real evidence that tied them to the murder. • Both men were carrying guns when arrested,and Sacco gun was the same type used in the murder and bullets used in the murder matched the ones in Saccos gun. Does that make you guilty?

  4. Verdict • Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty and sentenced to DEATH. • The judge stated that even though there was no evidence to prove they commited the murder they were GUILTY because they disagreed with the beliefs of our country. • Sacco and Vanzetti were excuted while they and many others proclaimed their innocence.

  5. Pseudo –Scientific Racism • Eugenics is a pseudo( false) science deals with improving hereditary traits. • Eugenics emphasized that human inequalities were inherited and warned against breeding the unfit with the fit. • Fueled the nativists argument for the superiority of the original American stock WASP. • President Wilson embraced eugenics. Who else?

  6. Ku Klux Klan • Wanted to restrict immigration in America. • Targeted African Americans ,Catholics ,Jews and other un –Americans.

  7. Controlling Immigration • Emergency Quota Act created a quota (number) to limit immigration. • 3 % of the total number of people in ethnic group in America allowed. • National Origins Act tightened the quota with a limit of 150,000 immigrants per year.

  8. Hispanic Immigration • The acts reduced the labor pool. • Workers and labor unions were happy (why?) • Employers were desperately in need of laborers. • SOLUTION?

  9. Mexican Immigration • The National Orgins Act exempted natives of the western hemisphere from the quota system. • Over 600,000 Mexicans immigrated to the U.S.

  11. New Morality • Value of family • Women in the work force • Single women worked because needed wages, way to break away from parental authority and allowed women to participate in the consumer culture. (spend money) Women went to college and were encouraged to pursue careers.

  12. New Morality continued • Automobile allowed for more independence and away from their parents watchful eye.

  13. Women In the 1920’s • Flapper A young dramatic and stylish woman. • She smoked,drank dressed in revealing clothes. ( dressing up to knees , plunging neckline) • She wore flesh colored stocking • Wore lipstick( RED) • Kissed their boyfriends goodnight. • Went to night clubs and danced the dance of the 20”sTHE CHARLESTON.

  14. Fundamentalist Movement • Religious movement known as fundamentalism. • BELIEFS: • Bible was literally true and without error • Rejected idea of evolution • Creationism God created the world And everything in it Billy Sunday evangelist revivals.

The Scopes Trail • Fight over evolution • Against the law to teach the theory of evolution in Tennessee schools • ACLU wanted to challenge this law . • John Scopes volunteered to break the law and be arrested for teaching evolution. • Lawyers: prosecutor ,William Jennings Bryan • Defense, Clarence Darrow. • Bryan interested in the Rock Of Ages not the age of rocks. • Judge put up a banner behind his bench which read . Read your Bible • Scopes found guilty fined $100 dollars.

  16. Prohibition • 18th Amendment outlaw the sale of alcohol. • Results • Speakeasies secret bars where people could buy alcohol • Bootlegging • Moonshinning • Organized crime Al Copone • Untouchables Elliot Ness
