2. Welcome to IVC Nursing Program • This is a Program, not just a group of classes • Designed to prepare you for: • “Nursing Boards” called NCLEX - required for licensure • Practicing as a RN • Career requiring lifelong learning & applying that knowledge. • The profession of Nursing is rarely stagnant • In July 2009, the governor fired 3 members of the BRN! • Safety requirements for patients, communities, & nurses. • Nurses are at the bedside, in informatics, in research, in education, in administration, etc.

3. Program Information • Handbook • Effective August 24, 2009 • Student Input accepted • www.imperial.edu • Parking • Plan to arrive 20-30 minutes early until all parking lots are completed • Tardiness x 3 will count as an absence

4. Grading and Progression • Nursing Program Grades and Progression • Grading not the same as other courses. • To progress to next semester, you must be successful. • Only 1 ‘second chance’ , if you withdraw or fail to earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher grade in a semester.

6. Estimated Costs (whole program) • Uniforms, etc $ 125 – 250 • Books $1,000 -2,000 • Background /Drug Screen $ 65 minimum • ATI Nurse-in-a-Box $ 355 • Malpractice Insurance $ 26-30 • Graduation $ 80 • Licensure $ 400 • Lab Fee (material used) $ 20-60 depending on sem. in 2010 • Physical Exam FREE if on campus • CPR Variable / FREE • Immun., Vaccines, & TB Variable / FREE

7. Uniforms – worn in clinical & skills labs • New and required for Fall 2009. Handbook lists specifics. • White scrub top • True Red scrub pant • White scrub jacket (optional) • White shoes • Available at Phoenix Uniforms – El Centro or www.Landau.com • Student identification badge required in clinical & skills labs • Go to IVC College Center, Casbah Room or call 355-6358 • ID Badge must have a picture, first initial, & last name

9. Skills Laboratories • There are 4 skills rooms • 2 Low-Tech • 2 High-Fidelity – capable of interactive simulations • All equipment and supplies are expensive. Treat all with respect or it will not be there for you to learn. • NO cell phones, cameras, food, or drinks allowed. • In these 4 rooms are where you will: • Practice all your nursing skills • Be ‘checked-off’ as competent in all required skills • Complete any required practicum

10. Physical Exam • Call the Student Health Center @ 355-6310 for appt. • Bring immunization record. If necessary, ck with Public Health. • If unable to prove, titers may be necessary . • MMR and TD is free at the Student Health Center if needed. • Hepatitis B & Varicella are recommended. Available at the Public Health Department for a cost. • The TB skin test (PPD) requires a follow-up within 48-72 hours. • If you tested positive on a TB skin test in the past: • Bring recent chest x-ray report or ask the nurse to schedule you for one. (Cost will be about $24.00)

Background & Drug Check • Background Results • www.sdnsebackground.com • If any negative comments, make an appointment with the Program Director and begin a paper trail to explain what happened and how you have corrected it. • Healthcare facilities will not allow students with a record of violence to practice • Drug Screen • www.questdiagnostics.com/appointments • If results positive for any drug, make an appointment with the Program Director

ATI Testing • ATI Tests provide a standardized method of assessment. • Accepted by most schools in California as valid & reliable. • Proctored tests are given in each semester • List is provided in the Student Handbook • Scoring is provided in the Student Handbook • Nurse-in-the-Box • Study guide, books, & DVDs • Virtual ATI (4th Semester – an additional cost)

Nursing Learning Center (NLC) Rules • Sign in & out regardless of enrollment in NURS 089. • Return to rightful place - whatever is used in skills lab practice. • Clean up after yourself. • NO food, drinks, cell phones, or cameras. • Books may be checked out for 3 days only. • Videos or CDs may only be used in the NLC • Copies cost $0.10/page with a limit of 10 pages at a time. • All items marked ‘Reference Only’ cannot be removed. • Respect privacy of NLC staff phone, computer, desk, files, etc.
