Objectives for January 6, 2014 • Content Objective: Students will be able to reference various documents in order to actively participate and contribute to the classroom learning environment. • Language Objective: The students will paraphrase (restate in their own words) the objective of the lesson… “We are going to learn____________________.” (Echevarria,Vogt, & Short, 2014, p.45)

  5. Reflective Reading for January 6, 2014 • Reflective Reading: An excerpt from Leo Buscaglia’s book entitled, Love. This book was published in 1972. • Some exciting work has been going in California by some great humanist psychologists like Rogers, Maslow, and Herbert Otto. These men and others are saying that only a small portion of what we are, are we, and that there is an enormous potential in the human being, that it isn’t outlandish to say that if we really desired to fly, we could fly! We could have the ability to feel that would be so spectacular that we could feel color! We could have the ability to see better than an eagle, the ability to smell better than a bird dog, and a mind that could be so big, it would constantly be full of exciting dreams. Yet we are perfectly happy to be only a small portion of what we are. (Buscaglia, 1972, p. 8-9)

Objectives for January 7,2014 • Content Objective: Students will be able to create and evaluate the topics for their New Year’s Resolution project. • Language Objective: Students will brainstorm a list (list ideas without judging whetherthey are good or bad) of possible topics for the project. With a partner, they will determine if the topic is viable (a good choice).

  10. Reflective reading for January 7, 2014 • Reflective Reading: An excerpt from Leo Buscaglia’s book entitled, Love. This book was published in 1972. • A London psychiatrist, R.D. Laing, in his book, The Politics of Experience, suggests something very provoking—something alien and rather frightening, yet a wonderful challenge. He says, “What we think is less than what we know: What we know is less than what we love. What we love is so much less than what we are.” Isn’t that a mind blower? • Knowing this, we should have a tremendous desire to become. If all of life is directed toward the process of becoming, of growing, of seeing, of feeling, of touching, of smelling, there won’t be a boring second. • (Buscaglia, 1972, p.9)

Objectives for January 8, 2014 • Content Objective: The students will be able to read, understand, summate, and evaluate the excerpt from the Introduction of the book entitled, Love, by Dr. Leo Buscaglia (1972). • Language Objective: The students will be able to understand what the author is saying. They will decide if they agree or disagree with the article. The will make a list (a T-chart) of the evidence (data) to support their opinion.

  15. Reflective Reading for January 8, 2014 • Reflective Reading: An excerpt from Leo Buscaglia’s book entitled, Love. This book was published in 1972. • It seems to me that in the past we have not sufficiently celebrated the wonderful uniqueness of every individual. I would agree that personality is the sum total of all the experiences that we have known since the moment of conception to this point in our life along with heredity. But what is often ignored is an X factor. Something within the you of you that is different from every single human being, that will determine how you will project in this world, how you will see this world, how you will become a special human being. (Buscaglia, 1972, p.9)

Content Objective: The students will discuss and defend their stance on the excerpt from the Introduction of the book entitled, Love, by Dr. Leo Buscaglia (1972) • Language Objective: The students will be able to effectively communicate their understanding of what the author is saying. They will defend their decision a to if they agree or disagree with the reading. The observers will make a T-Chart of the evidence (data) to support their opinion.

Objectives for January 10, 2014 • Content Objective: The students will be debrief, evaluate and draw conclusions from the Socratic Seminar regarding the Introduction of the book entitled, Love, by Dr. Leo Buscaglia (1972). • Language Objective: The students will be able to effectively communicate their understanding of what the Socratic Seminar participants’ stances.

  24. Reflective Reading for January 10, 2014 • Reflective Reading: An excerpt from Leo Buscaglia’s book entitled, Love. This book was published in 1972. • We are living in a culture where a person is not measured by who he is or what he is but rather by what he has. If he has a lot, he must be a great man. If he has little, he must be insignificant. About seven years ago I decided that I was going to do something really weird, at least at that time it was considered weird. I was going to sell everything I had, my car my life insurance policy, my house, all the “important” things, and I was going to take off for a couple of years. I was going to look for me. I spent most of my time in Asia because I know less about Asia than any other part of the world. The countries of Asia are underdeveloped countries. They have very little and, therefore, they must be terribly insignificant. Well, I found out very differently. Those of you who have been there or have delved into Asian culture will agree how wrong this Western concept is. I learned many, many things in Asia that I brought back with me which have really put me on a different path. Where it is leading I don’t know and I don’t care, but it’s different and exciting and wondrous. (Buscaglia, 1972, p. 12)
