Setting In this imaginative world, planes haven’t been invented on Earth. In this world airships rule the skies. In the story it takes places somewhere in the 1930’s or 1940’s. There are two major corresponding settings, a grand passenger airship known as the Aurora and a mysterious island with a creature not truly discovered by man.
Characters Matt Cruse is the main character who is very determined person to follow in his father’s footsteps on the Aurora’s crew even though he is the smallest. He also has dirty blonde hair with brown eyes. Kate de Vries is a young, stubborn, adventurous girl with deep brown hair with excitement in her eyes. Szpirglas is a ruthless pirate with a suave personality, most of the time. He’s tall, lean, handsome, and pale.
Plot: Conflict The Aurora is boarded by the famous sky pirate, Szpirglas. When they crash land on an island, Kate believes that it is the island that her grandfather saw amazing creatures that soar through the sky. As they explore the island they learn that the creatures are carnivorous beast and the island they’re on is the hideout for Szpirglas. As his men find the Aurora so does the beast.
Plot: Resolution Matt, Kate and a crew member Bruce intend to take the ship back before the pirates’ vile plot to slaughter the hostages comes to life. They then think of getting the ship of the ground so no one can get in or out. As they are looking for pirates aboard, they come across a sleeping elixir and get a daring idea.
Your Opinion This book was amazing! The National Library made a good choices awarding Airborn with Newberry Medal. This book is a complete page-turner has parts that will blow your mind.
