Christmas in Portugal • Being a Christian country, Portugal celebrates the birth of Jesus. It is one of the most important celebrations in Portugal. • Due to globalization, the Christmas has started to be influenced by other cultures. Prove of this is the replacement of Jesus by Santa. • Most of the people garnish their houses with lights and figures to represent the nativity scene. Some cities also become illuminated by lights.
Christmas eve • In the Christmas eve, December 24th, most of the families reunite in a special dinner called “Consoada”. At this dinner the main dish varies from cod or octopus to roasted turkey and traditional desserts. • After dinner there is a special ceremony that takes place at churches, called Missa do Galo, where most of the families go to.
Christmas day • In the 25th, people visit their relatives. The main course is “roupavelha” which is a dish made from the leftovers of the day before.
Celebration of Christmas • Before Christmas children write to Santa Claus, letting him know what they would like for Christmas. Children are normally allowed to open their gifts at midnight. • Grownups exchange postal cards between them, but nowadays this is mostly done by email or SMS. • At schools the students make drawings, postal cards, texts and small plays.
Janeiras • Janeiras is a tradition of singing throughout the streets by groups of people advertising the birth of Jesus and wishing a happy new year. • These groups go from door to door singing and asking for something in return. • This happens between January 1st and 6th. • At the end, the group decides whatever to divide what was collected or to make a supper.
