Difficult Tutoring Situations • Wants tutor to do all the work • Poor motivation • Forgets materials • Learning disabilities • Attendance problems • Does not understand basic concepts • Student always copies work of others • Unrealistic expectations or demands of tutor
Handling Student Frustrations Helper: Help students learn for THEMSELVES • Give positive reinforcement • Remain optimistic and positive • Share different methods • Let student identify problem if possible • Show student there are steps to success and it doesn’t just come all at once • Avoid unrealistic and unreachable goals • Stay relaxed • Share personal experiences • Never criticize the PERSON, just critique the work, always pointing out the good along with the bad
Dealing with the unprepared student • Address issues of responsibility- you cannot help them succeed if they don’t keep up their end of the bargain • Determine their level of commitment • Teach student organizational, study, and time management skills • Share successful tips • Guide student on how to get started • Check understanding
