What is a phobia? • phobia(from Greek: φόβος, phobos, "fear") . • is an inappropriate sense of anxiety or fear triggered by exposure to a specific object or situation. • It is not an illness, not a mental disorder, Nor is it a lack of will-power, or 'moral fibre', or determination.
Social phobia • Social phobia occurs when there is an excessive fear of social situations ,ex. small groups of people at parties . • People with social phobia have no confidence with people they don't know, and fear that strangers are being critical of them. • fear that they will behave in an embarrassing way, such as blushing or shaking in public.
Agoraphobia • means a fear of open spaces, often because of worry about having a panic attack . • People with agoraphobia may avoid being on bridges, busy streets or in crowded stores, so disabled. they literally will not leave their homes. • often starts in late adolescence and early adulthood. It's more common in women than men.
Specific Phobia • These are very common in children. But some phobias carry on until adult life, • animals (e.g. spiders, snakes, mice, birds and insects) . • the natural world (e.g. storms, heights, weather) . • blood, injections and injury . • certain situations (enclosed spaces, lifts, planes) .
Specific Phobia • Sometimes, people can become phobic about catching illnesses or anything that puts them at risk of vomiting or choking. • Specific phobias are more common in women, and they often begin in childhood. • People who suffer from these phobias rarely have any other psychiatric or psychological problems
Symptoms of Phobias • If you have a phobia, you usually won't have any symptoms until you are faced with your feared situation • or object (or, sometimes, if you think about, or see a picture of it). • You may then develop symptoms of anxiety, including:
fast breathing being aware of a fast heart a choking sensation flushing sweating feeling faint numbness . tension headaches . dizziness "churning" of the stomach diarrhea Symptoms of Phobias
