3. Today is About… • Looking over our essays together to effectively edit and revise, getting help, asking questions, learning!! Today is not about… • Negativity • Feeling discouraged

4. If you need a pen, you can get one at the front of the room. Do not edit using the same “tool” that your essay is written in. As we go through each section – check that you have all the parts of the essay and that everything is written as clearly as possible. Make a note to yourself or fix anything that needs fixing. ASK QUESTIONS!!

5. Things to Watch for Overall • Each paragraph should have at least 5 complete sentences. Scan your paper – mark any paragraphs that seem a little short. • Have You Avoided: •  Using “I” or “I think” •  Saying things such as “this shows,” “this proves that,” “I am going to prove that,” etc… • Using contractions (can’t, don’t, won’t, shouldn’t, isn’t, you’re, etc..) • Scan your paper – mark any places that need to be reworded.

Take a Look At Your Introduction… Your introduction must: • Start with an attention grabber that is much more general than your thesis • Have a few sentences that join your attention grabber to your thesis. • End with a thesis statement (be sure it arguable – someone could disagree with you) Circle or highlight your thesis.

8. Body Paragraph 1 CHECK: Does the main point of this paragraph support your thesis? Your Body Paragraph Must Include: • A topic sentence that tells what the main point of the paragraph will be – needs to be arguable. (first sentence) • An end sentence that tells the main idea of the paragraph again in new words. (last sentence) • An explanation that shows your reader what you mean and clearly explains how this idea supports your thesis. Mark any place you need to work on.

11. Sharing Choose one or more body paragraphs to share with your neighbour. Pick a paragraph that you think might need work. Ask your neighbour a specific question. For example: • Do I explain myself clearly? • How could I reword this part? • I need to add an end sentence, but I’m not sure what to say?

12. Look at Your Conclusion Your conclusion must: • Start with repeating your thesis statement in new words. • Summarize the main ideas of your three body paragraphs. Use at least one sentence for each. • End with a general statement, that leaves a lasting impression with your reader Remove any new points or arguments that you haven’t discussed in your essay!
