S.N.C.C.’s new leadership • Stockely Carmichael becomes chairman in 1966. • Black power and the black panther party begins. • Riots • Watts arrest on August 11, 1965, exploded into a 6 day riot. • 34 people died, 1,072 injured, and 4,000 arrested. • Property loss of $40 million • Detroit in 1965 and 1967 exploded in riots. • Looted white owned businesses then set fire to the businesses. • National guard troops were sent in to help local police. • In 1966 the Black Panther party was formed in Oakland, CA.

  4. 1967— Kerner Report • Racial disorders in 150 cities. • Kerner Report • Released in March of 1968 • “racial attitude and behavior of white Americans toward black Americans.” • This could be visible in patterns of racial discrimination and prejudice, in African American migration to the cities followed by white flight to the suburbs, and in the existence of African American ghettos. • Report cited three triggers for racial violence: • Frustrated hopes of A.A. • Approval and encouragement of violence, both by white terrorists and by some A.A protest groups • And the sense many A.A had of being powerless in a society dominated by whites. • Report recommended the elimination of all racial barriers in jobs, education, and housing; greater public response to problems of racial minorities; and increased communication across racial lines.

  5. Assassinations • November 1963; President John F. Kennedy assassinated in Dallas, Texas. • April 4, 1968: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. • He was there to rally support for the garbage collectors. • He was also making speeches against the Vietnam War - - because many young men fighting were A.A men. (high percent of the population) • June 6th, 1968: Robert Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles, CA.
