  1. IN THE LIFE OF A MADEKA By: MickyDeChurch and Luke Spack

  2. Day 1 • Story- Josiah was transported to us when he was around 28 hours old we believe. This means that are medeka should hatch in around 12 days from now. it is in the neural stage and the keel is into two divisions now. The mesoderm is condensing quickly and we must change the water fast. Our poor Medeka is near death. The blastopore is reduced and are Medeka is fighting for survival. Vocab- • 1. Keel- organization during neurolation • 2. Mesoderm- This is made in the embryo of animals • 3. Blastopore- opening in archenentron • 4. Neuralation- nerve cords and central nervous system form • 5. Archenentron- caused by cells in the blastopore Structures- • 1. Oil Droplets- Help supply the egg with nutrients • 2. Chorion Membrane- A clear membrane that protects the egg • 3. Filaments- string fibers that help form clusters

  3. Day 2 • Story Continued- The next day when we came in too see are Medaka something very strange happened. Someone had switched our Medaka with someone elses. We had to search for our Medaka and finally found it since it had 42 hour old structures that were older than the other ones. The oil droplets were growing bigger and forming one big drop and the optic lense was growing smaller. The tail bud was formed, a large cavity is forming near its head. 12 somites are present and the otocyst is in the back of the brain. we were glad are Medaka was safe once again. We left class praying that it would not be stolen and changed again. Vocab- • 1.Optic lens- circular masses located in the embryo • 2.Somites- division of the body • 3.Ococyst- develops into the inner ear • 4.Optic Lobes- Vision Center Structures- • 1. Optic Lens- Cloudy in appearance • 2.Ococyst- a vesicle or cyst

  4. Day 4 • Story Continued- After we came back to class from are long weekend we realized we had forgotten to change are Medaka's water! We thought it surely had to be dead. As we approached the container Mick's eyes started to water and he was yelling, " Josiah, why did you have to die, I'm sorry!" The whole class started to laugh at him but then he saw are Medaka was alive. It had changed dramatically and was squirming all around. There were numerous changes. It had grown a aorta, caridial veins, eyes, and a brain. Also, the pectorally fin is growing extremely fast and it looks as if our Medaka is going to make it. We found a heartbeat and it was 150 beats a minute. Vocab- • 1. Aorta- carries blood from the left side of the heart to the arteries of all limbs • 2. Cardial Veins- Blood flow channels that move downward Structures- • 1.Eyes- help the fish to see • 2. Brain- part of the central nervous system that controls thought • 3. Heart- the heart helps to circulate blood throughout the body

  5. Day 7 • Story Continued- The next day class was very interesting. We found our water discolored and yellow. We thought are fish was bleeding but the endocrine system had formed overnight. The fish had traveled down the class sink. Me and Micky thought we better go find it. We shrunk extremely fast under the ray gun. We found the fish swimming in the very bottom pipe of the school. It apparently found a huge spider who it thought was its mother. So we decided we would fight it. We stuck a lead pipe through its neck when it tried to prounce on top of Me. We noticed there were more developments to our fish. It had a bladder, intestine, a better pectoral fin and its eyes were almost completely visible. Vocab- • 1. Intestine- where food is digested and • waste travels through • 2. Bladder- a stretchy bag that holds urine Structures- • 1. Eyes- the fishes eyes are visible and it can • now probably see • 2. Pectoral Fins- The fins are growing and • the fish is moving more regularly

  6. Day 9 • Story Continued- As we walked into our classroom over the weekend we were suprised to see our Medaka actually in its container. Next we examined are fish and realized that it was close to hatching. We became very excited and started singing Don't Stop Believing. We saw that various structures had completely formed and other structures were still forming. The Dorsal fin grew in and the digestive system and nervous system were basically formed. The hindbrain had formed also. The Yolk was dissapearing since the egg was close to hatching and did not need nutrients. The spleen and mouth were formed and now we new for sure that our egg would hatch for sure the next day. Vocab- • 1. Mouth- where food is entered and chewed at • 2.Spleen- filters blood, stores cells Structures- • 1. Yolk- Supplid the fish with nutrients but is slowly • dissappearing due to the fact that the fish does not • need the nutrients and is going to hatch • 2. Dorsal Fin- on back of the fish, and it helps it to stay • balance when swimming • 3. Hindbrain- developementalcatorgization of • portions of central nervous system

  8. Day 12 • Story Continued- The big day had come. Our Josiah was going to hatch! We through a party in our class for all the hatching fishes. Crowns fell out of the ceiling for our fishes and music was playing. We were looking at the developed fish and everything had been formed. As micky was looking at it the fish started squirming uncontrollably. We thought it was having a seizure. All of a sudden, it broke out of the embryo and started dancing to the music. We had to pin it down to the microscope to take a picture of it. We placed it in the tank and it lived there until I tried to take it home, but thats another story!
