Woody base • Generally grows on rocky slopes and foothills in the low mountains of West Texas • Toxin is a photodynamic agent. The animal absorbs this substance directly from its digestive tract and can transfer it to calves through the milk.
Jimmy Fern • Is an evergreen, erect fern with simple, fern=like leaves. • Toxic agent is unknown. The poison is excreted in milk and not destroyed when the plant dries. Occurs in sheep, goats and cattle.
Desert Spike (Oligomeris linifolia) • Rather succulent, erect, annual plant readhing 14-15”. • Toxic agent is unknown. Only cattle are known to have been poisoned by this plant in Texas.
Coyotillo (Karwinskia humboldtiana) • Spineless woody shrub or small tree of the buckthorn family. • Toxic agent is unknown. Toxic to cattle, sheep, goats, hogs and fowl, cattle are the most susceptible.
