  3. Aten • Appears as a sun disk with rays that end as hands • During the reign of Akhenaten, Aten was made the ruler of gods • Aten was a form of the sun god Ra • Aten is also called Aton • Aten as a religion called Atenism • Aten started a religious and spiritual changes in Ancient Egypt

  4. Hapy Hapy appeared as a man with a potbelly, showcased with plants. Hapy was the god of inundation. Inundation was the annual flooding of the Nile River. Hapy was particularity meaningful to the Egyptians because he brought the flood every year. The flood put rich silt on the banks of the Nile, enabling the Egyptians to grow crops.

  5. Isis Isis appears as a woman with a headdress in the shape of a throne. She also has a pair of cow horns with a sun disk. Isis was a motherly goddess. She used strong magic spells to benefit people in need. Since each pharaoh was considered ‘living Horus’, Isis was very important. Isis is often shown holding Horus on her lap. Isis is associated with thrones because her lap was the first throne that Horus sat on. A temple was created to honor Isis at Philae. It is still remaining today.

  6. Osiris Osiris appears as a mummified man wearing a white cone like headdress with feathers. Osiris was the God of the dead, and ruler of the underworld. Osiris was the brother of Nephys, and Seth. In addition he was the father of Horus. As well as being the God of the dead, Osiris was the god of resurrection, and fertilely. Resurrection means rebirth. In fact the ancient Egyptians thought that Osiris gave the gift of barley, one of there most substantial crops. A large temple was built to honor Osiris at at Abydos. Abydos is a town in upper Egypt.

  8. Nut Nut’s father, the god of the air. He was given the job of keeping Nut and Geb (the earth god) apart. This is why the sky is so far above the earth. The god of the wind stays between them, keeping his daughter from visiting her love, the earth. There are no pictures of the him because he is not seen like air.

  9. Set Set was the god of desert, storms, and evil. He was a very powerful god and was very slick. After killing his brother Osiris he was defeated by his nephew Horus. Then he fled to the desert where he controlled all evil harsh lands. Though he wasn’t all bad he used to protect the sun god Ra from demons on his boat. He was human below the head and had part dog part anteater facial features.

  10. Thoth Thoth was the god of writing and knowledge. The ancient Egyptians believed that Thoth gave them the gift of hieroglyphic [writing consisting of hieroglyphics] writing. Thoth connected with the moon.

Bes • Bes was a dwarf with Lion and human features. • He was a dwarf with the skin of a lion. • Bes was the protector of pregnant woman and new born babies. • The ancient Egyptians also believed that Bes protected against snake and scorpion bites. • Amulets of Bes were popular at all levels of Egyptian society.
