What is Title One Reading? • Title One reading intervention is a federally funded program. • “The purpose of this title is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.” – US Dept. of Education
Eligibility • Aimsweb (timed readings) • MAP: Measures of Academic Progress (the computerized test) • ISAT state test (4th and 5th graders) • Progress last year on MAP (as applicable) • Teacher observations & recommendations
Title 1 Reading at Lincoln • During the school day • 30-60 min. intervention times • Use of research-based interventions and strategies • May include language arts as well (writing)
Progress Monitoring • Every 2 weeks • R-CBM (time readings) • Writing - TWW: Total Words Written - CWS: Correct Writing Sequences - WSC: Words Spelled Correctly
Re-evaluation • On-going through progress monitoring and classroom observations • Needs 4 or more data points at or above aim line • Formally re-evaluated in Dec./Jan. and April through all-school Aimsweb and MAP
What do you need to do? • If your child is eligible… - Send back the compact signed by both you and your child. - Help your child with Extra Learning Opportunities (ELO). - Promote reading and writing!
Parental Involvement Policy • The Lincoln Elementary School will take the following actions to involve parents in the joint development of its school parental involvement plan under section 1118 of the ESEA: • Involving parental input with the planning of the parental involvement plan at the Title One Informational Meeting • Providing a draft of the plan to parents, asking for any input, comments, or concerns regarding the parental involvement plan. • Posting the plan on the school’s website. • Requesting parental input on the Title One program in the mid-year and end of year Title One surveys.
Parental Involvement Policy, cont. • The Lincoln Elementary School will at the request of parents, provide opportunities for regular meetings for parents to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children. The school will respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible by: • Scheduling IAT (RtI problem solving) meetings • Holding parent-teacher conferences • Arranging for meetings with the classroom teacher and/or literacy coordinator • Emailing information to parents • Sending home notes and progress monitoring to parents • Discussing suggestions, decisions, and concerns over the phone • Holding phone conferences
Parental Involvement Policy, cont. • The Lincoln Elementary School will provide each parent an individual student report about the performance of their child on the State assessment in at least math, language arts and reading by: • Sending home ISAT and benchmark testing data at parent-teacher conferences • Scheduling parent-teacher conferences for teachers to explain and provide the state assessment results to parents.
Parental Involvement Policy, cont. The Lincoln Elementary School will provide assistance to parents of children served by the school, as appropriate, in understanding topics by undertaking the actions described • Sending home ISAT and benchmark testing data at parent-teacher conferences • Scheduling parent-teacher conferences for teachers to explain and provide the state assessment results to parents. • Sending home progress monitoring data at least once a grading period to parents with students receiving Title One reading services. • Sending home a letter explaining how to read the progress monitoring data with all progress monitoring data. • Holding the Title One informational meeting during Meet the Teacher night on August 30, 2012. Holding 3 additional Title One Informational Meetings during fall parent-teacher conferences. • Holding a reading night for parents at least once during the school year: Thursday, October 4, 2012.
Parental Involvement Policy, cont. The Lincoln Elementary School will take the following actions to ensure that information related to the school and parent-programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand: • Sending home ISAT and benchmark testing data at parent-teacher conferences • Scheduling parent-teacher conferences for teachers to explain and provide the state assessment results to parents. • Sending home progress monitoring data at least once a grading period to parents with students receiving Title One reading services. • Sending home a letter explaining how to read the progress monitoring data with all progress monitoring data. • Using translating software and Internet sites to translate material for parents, if needed.
