What the laptops can do… •Authenticate to Windows using the DET Portal ID – one laptop user only • Connect to the school’s new wireless network providing access to Internet, DET intranet, school’s web services • Print to selected HP networked laser printers via IP printing. • Run the pre-installed applications • Provide a virtual 1366x768 display • Connect wired or wirelessly at home • Accept a USB flash, SD card or external hard drive to read from or write to. • Connect via Remote Desktop to specified school terminal servers – not yet available at PPHS

  7. It is time to stop learning about technology and start using technology to learn – to focus on the outcomes of the use of technology rather than just its use.

  8. What support do students need to achieve this? Students undertake challenging and stimulating learning activities supported by access to global information resources and powerful tools for information processing, communication and collaboration

  9. What sort of activities will students now be able to do with their laptops, the software and tools?

  10. Immediately engage with their learning • Record information and evidence of learning through photographs, microphone recording • Create professional multimedia presentations in a variety of mediums e.g. Flash Video, Audio, PDF, Notebook 10 software and the full Adobe Suite.

Interact with curriculum specific tools like Geogebra (Math), Google Sketchup (TAS), periodic table (Science), One Note software • Create professional multimedia presentations in a variety of mediums (Powerpoint, Flash, Photoshop) • Prepare presentations for use on the interactive white board (Smart Tools and Accessories)

  12. What About The Teachers?

  13. The teacher roll-out is almost complete. • The majority of teaching staff throughout NSW have been allocated laptops. • No teacher devices this year. • Teacher devices were rolled out in 2009 and 2011. Future teacher roll outs in discussion.

  14. Teachers have began to implement technology into their daily lessons. Many successfully use their learning tools with students and visa versa. • Teachers also use their laptops for administrative tasks such as roll marking. This simplifies many tasks.

  16. Laptop User Charter Prior to receiving a laptop students must return a signed agreement. This agreement includes: • a commitment to take the laptop home and charge the battery • acceptable computer and Internet use including rules about cyber bullying. Failure to comply with the Laptop User Charter could result in: • Recall of the laptop • Loss of access for home use

Laptop User Charter • What happens if my laptop breaks? • • All laptops and batteries are covered • by a manufacturer’s 2 years warranty. • • The warranty covers manufacturer’s defects and normal • use of the laptop. • • This does not cover negligence, abuse or malicious damage. • What happens if I accidentally damage my laptop? • In the case of loss or accidental damage a statutory declaration signed by a Justice of the Peace must be provided before a laptop can be replaced. This replacement may be at the family’s expense.

  18. What happens if my laptop is stolen? • Hack-resistant hardware has been included to track and render stolen laptops useless. The technology removes any incentive to steal the devices. Thieves can be tracked and prosecuted. Devices can be frozen by request. • In the case of suspected theft, a police event number must be provided before a laptop can be replaced. Fraudulent or excessive claims could lead to loss of access to a laptop for home use.

The NSW Department of Education and Training is providing students with a personal laptop on the expectation that they will make good decisions with regard to their personal use of technology. • Laptop User Charter

Will students be taught how • to care for their laptops? • Students will receive guidance on • good laptop care – this includes • ergonomics and safe charging. • Students will be encouraged to: • • Keep the laptop safe. • • Take care when using and charging. Laptops should not be placed on or under soft items such as pillows, lounge chairs or blankets as this may cause the laptop to overheat and could result in damage. • • Keep the laptop inside school bags when travelling to and from school. A durable padded sleeve will be provided.

What happens if a family does not have Internet access at home? • The laptop will have many uses at home without the Internet but the students’ ability to gain full benefit from the laptop will be much greater if they have Internet access at home. • Access will be via the home Internet service provider either wired by Ethernet or a wireless access point. • DET filters apply when students go online at home via the DET portal.

Comments from Parents • “The laptop has heightened my child's sense of responsibility towards their learning”. • “She became more independent and proactive in doing her school work”. • “I believe it is a successful trial and it's a great idea to use a laptop to make learning more interesting and effective.” • “I believe that this is the way to conduct education in time to come.”

  23. Parents were enthusiastic about the wireless laptops because they: • enhance student learning • include extensive software • assist students with their organisation • lighten the schoolbag load • give their children a sense of ownership • provide mobile learning • save the family budget

Picnic Point High School Timeline • Tonight – Information and signing of the Charter • From Thursday 30 February– Students who have returned their signed charter will have their laptops commissioned • Friday 31 February– All laptops should be commissioned and ready for use in classrooms • The future – “A revolutionary journey for our students begins
