  1. In your seed notebook, complete the following assignment. Make a connection to any character, setting, or conflict in a movie, television show, or book. This can be a text to text, text to self, or text to world. For example: When I saw the movie Marley and Me, I made a connection between Marley and my dog Saddie. When both of them were puppies, they ate many things in the house, creating many arguments between family members.

Your Turn • Read the poem “Valediction”on page 252 in the literature book. • In your seed notebook, quickly sketch what the poem portrays. • When finished, share your drawings with your pod mates and discuss what the poem means. • Complete a READING RESPONSE JOURNAL connecting the poem to something in your life (T-S), to another piece of text (T-T), OR to other people or events in the world (T-W).

When I read Farewell to Manzanar, it reminded me of the Holocaust because both Jewish people and Japanese people were treated unfairly and placed in internment camps. • 2. I suddenly became upset when I read about Tori’s mom being addicted to alcohol in Firefly Lanebecause I thought about how my uncle struggled with alcoholism and tore his family apart. • 3. I compared Ruby BridgestoTo Kill a Mockingbird because in both texts, African Americans unfairly endured racism even though both of the main characters had done nothing wrong.
