  2. What is a global issue? • When we talk about a global issue we are usually referring to something that affects a number of countries and populations. It is an issue that impacts upon or is important to the global community,

  3. What are some global issues? • Natural Disasters • flood • hurricane • tornado • drought • blizzard • tsunami • child • malnutrition • labour • soldiers • war • poverty • disease • AIDS • cancer • malaria • global warming • habitat destruction

  4. Newspaper Hunt • In your groups, read through your newspaper • Identify and record any world issues, where they are located, and what (if any) organizations are involved. • Students with Smartphones/Tablets/iPod Touch’s: look on the internet to find other examples of world issues (check out Huffington Post, BBC) • Each group should find at least 4 issues • When finished, send a group member to bring your information to the teacher

  5. Who intervenes in these issues? • Greenpeace • United Nations • UNICEF • Free the Children • Amnesty International • …

Definitions • NGO: Any international organization that is not under the authority of any government and members work together to address various global issues. • IGO: An organization initiated and directed by national governments. Countries within these organizations cooperate to address various global issues

  7. Doctors Without Borders • Do you think this name represents an organization that is an IGO or NGO? • What kind of borders do you think this organization crosses? • Under what circumstances do you think these doctors cross borders? • What risks may be associated with crossing these borders?

  8. Homework • Complete the worksheet by doing research on the internet. • Due Wednesday • NGO: non-governmental organization (we’ll look at this more tomorrow) • You will be using this for the main assignment for this unit • Creating a logo, slogan, advertisement for an NGO
