  1. 7. Who is this? Mark 4:35-41 p. 926

  2. Short & Simple • A well-loved Sunday School story • Jesus has authority over the forces of nature • Spiritualized: Jesus calms our storms of life • One question: Why was Jesus so nasty? • “Do you still have no faith?” (v 40) • Stylistic features of Mark: • Story revolves around the two sets questions

  3. 1. Who is this? • Story continues “ ... That day when evening came” • Details confirm eyewitness testimony • Mark’s wordplays: • “There was a great storm” (v 37) • “There was a great calm” (v 39) • “ ... great storm ... rebuke ... great calm ...” • “they feared a great fear” (v 41)

  4. 1. Who is this? ... • Jesus’ action: • “He rebukes the wind” (strange) • Says to the sea “seopa!” • “SHUT UP” • Immediately there is “a great calm” • Who then is this? The wind and the sea obey him ! • Who is this? • No answer. Left hanging.

  5. 2. Do you not yet have Faith? • They are afraid: seems reasonable to me. • Jesus: • rebukes the wind, • shuts up the sea, • scolds his disciples. • For LACK OF FAITH

  6. 2. Do you not yet have Faith? ... • What did they know? • The secret of the Kingdom has been given to you (4:11) • Alone with his disciples, he explained everything (4:34) • They should have known • But they failed to believe • They were overwhelmed by the fear of the moment • It’s not OK !!!

  7. 3. Knowing & Believing • Home Groups: • Help one another see God at work in our lives. • Knowing God & walking with Him • An awesome gift of grace • Precious beyond measure • Learning from my children ... • God is faithful & He can be trusted.

  8. 3. Knowing & Believing ... • Jesus required 2 things of his disciples: • To know and understand him and his kingdom • To act on that knowledge in faith Knowledge & Understanding • Know with mind heart soul and strenth • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ...” (Col 3:16) • Delight in the Law ... meditate on it day and night (Ps 1:2)

  9. 3. Knowing & Believing ... Acting in Faith • Live in the joy & fullness of God’s Shalom • Pursue obedience: make disciples ... teach them everything • Sacrificially share God’s Shalom with others

  10. Living in Faith • We know who this is • Failure is because we don’t take his identity/work seriously • Don’t do like the disciples: • “Teacher, don’t you care ...” (v 38) • He cares AND He is in control. • The disciples learned and so can we.
